I thought it was that only white people can be racist

iron_city_ap: I thought it was that only white people can be racist

Well I meant in the regard that people try to compare dressing as Jay-Z to, say, dressing as a turn-of-the-century "Black Face" stereotype.

Couple thoughts on this:

1) Blackface was offensive because of its use in minstrel shows to produce a racist caricature of a black people. Torres' costume was not a caricature or a representation of a racist archetype - rather, it was a depiction of an actual person, and a well-known public celebrity to boot. I don't see how they are the even remotely the same thing.

2) While blackface may have a sordid racist past in American cultural history, it has no such history or associations in Canada. Torres, as a Canadian, is probably unlikely to even know of any such connotations.

I'm with you 100%, I think you missed my sarcasm, but people instantly jump to the conclusion of 'racist' if its a white person. If a Japanese guy dressed in that exact same costume, nobody would say shiat. If Jay-Z dressed up to look like Bruce Lee... no big deal.

I was following Bissonnette's twitter when he posted that pic. I just knew that someone would yell "racist!" over it. As Doc Daneeka correctly pointed out, doing things like that has very negative meanings. But the intent wasn't racist and considering that it was a Halloween party, playing the racist card on this is just stupid.

His usage of the word was correct. Yours makes it sound like a completely different (and much grosser) show.

This is true, people from the monochromatic third world really don't have the cognitive capacity to understand the complex nature of living in a multicultural society. It's just beyond their genetic abilities. We really should pity "people" like him and his tribe.

Stupid that this should spark controversy. Doc spelled it out pretty well. Dressing as a black person in and of itself is not offensive, and trying to make it so shows a lack of understanding of what it is you want to be offended about.

/he should have gone to the party dressed as a hockey player

this is such a non story..

Not a fan of torres at all but he's done nothing wrong

I agree; I'm liberal as hell and I don't think that this is in any way degrading or racist. You'd make your skin lighter to be a pale-ass vampire, what the hell is wrong with making it darker because you're not actually as black as Jay-Z?

Minstrel (menstrual? (._. )) shows aside, there's literally nothing wrong with this.

Apparently, people have forgotten context when it comes to these sorts of things.

/what if you're dressed as a 'typical' scotsman? Red hair, kilt, bagpipes, and brogue? How come nobody white knights for the Scottish?
//half-chinese
///knows the difference between someone trying to offend me and someone making a joke

I don't care if he dressed up in real black face. It's halloween. People put on costumes.

It's almost 100 years ago.

Move on

My girlfriend wanted to go as Jay-Z and Beyonce for Halloween and I told her somebody would probably make a stink about it, even though it really shouldn't be offensive. Well, I'll have to show her this article now

All the white people agree that it's not racist? Wow, they're usually so hard to get consensus out of.
