Quitters never win and winners never quit.

I didn't know Sarah Palin was a marathon runner.

37-year-old Charles Whitmore Riske, of Costa Mesa, suffered a medical emergency near the finish line at L.A. Live around 9:30 a.m. as other participants were finishing up the 13.1-mile course.

That's only half a marathon, subby and TFA author

Seems to be taking the historical concept of "marathon" a bit too seriously, I'd say.

As someone who ran his first half-marathon this weekend, I'm getting a kick... wait no I'm not! I can barely walk on this knee, let alone kick!

I hate hearing about shiat like this, especially since I'm running the Rock 'n' Roll half in Savannah this weekend. It'll be my first.

A high-school kid in my town just died on Friday after collapsing during a cross-country race. Doctors aren't sure why he collapsed or what the cause of death was. Everything seemed normal. Weird shiat.

He was just emulating the original Greek runner Pheidippides.

heart attack is the most likely cause. hyponatremia is something that any race organizer is terrified of, but for it to be severe enough to cause death is less likely.

He should have known the Riskes. They were his family, after all.

Cross-country running is great if you live in a small country.
/same goes for skiing.
//not obscure, I hope.

Good luck!

Main advice I would give is to hit the early water stops even if you think you don't need to. Just have a few sips and go on. And if people are giving out orange slices, by all means eat a few of them. They always seem to really help us out.

Other than that just keep moving and have fun.

Since when is a marathon only 13.1-miles? I'm always the last to know.

Sudden Cardiac Death is a possible cause, it's nearly impossible to detect until there is an ischemic event and by that time it's very likely too late.

/Not a doctor.

I wonder if it was a down and back course (13.1 in each direction). That is how the Atlanta marathon is set up.

That said, RIP.

When you fall down dead at the 13 mile mark. It's hard to run the second half of it when you're dead.

RnR LA is just a half marathon, not a full.

And from looking at the course map, it is basically two out and backs (run out a couple miles in one direction, go back the same route but keep going past the start/finish area for a couple miles, then return that same path).

Well half way isn't "just short of the finish line."

Heh. I haven't heard that one before. You better believe I'm going to steal it, though.

I'm sure that no one has pointed out yet that this was a half-marathon, not a marathon.

Don't know. I have a couple of friends that have run it. It is a pretty damn challenging course.
