I'm 52 years old and I gave up white/processed sugar completely a couple years ago. I feel like I'm 25 years old. HUGE difference. It's addictive and you don't even know it until you ditch it. Ditch the bad sugar folks.

What's the 'good sugar?' And is it five times as expensive as the 'bad sugar?'

Fruits generally, natural sugars.

Good for you. Keep telling people. Also HFCS is what's making the country into an obese diabetic slug.

I, too, find myself agreeing with Gary for the first time ever.

Sugar is a farking drug.

Robert H. Lustig, MD, UCSF Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology, explores the damage caused by sugary foods. He argues that fructose (too much) and fiber (not enough) appear to be cornerstones of the obesity epidemic through their effects on insulin.

Unless you have the palate of a 6 year old, giving up candy and sugar water shouldn't be a big deal.

As someone who was just reading the nutritional information at McDonald's (yes, I get the futility of that), I am still surprised that a SIDE of Ranch dressing has more fat than a small order of fries.

I started this about a month ago now, at least to the extent that I can reasonably control it. Felt like crap for the first couple days and the cravings were brutal, but now I don't really crave that stuff at all now. My pants, which would stay on fine without a belt will now fall off if not secured by a belt and I think I will be shopping for new ones soon because I moved the belt another notch tighter yesterday. My appetite has also gone way down, and my energy up. The only downside is that my wife is kind of irritated with me for being able to lose weight so easily.

For the most part this has really been little more than saying no to candy, ice cream, and sugar in my coffee (I already gave up soft drinks years ago). I'm sure I'm still getting some sugar and HFCS from other foods, but I figure that as long as I continue to pay attention and cut bad things out as I discover them I am doing OK. It's a process.

I've cut back because I'm losing my sweet tooth as I age, but I can't really stop using processed sugars, because I make beer and do a lot of baking. Every sugar(corn sugar, brown sugar, molassas, rarely cane sugar) or malt(which is a bunch of sugars) I use is processed, except maybe honey, but it's processed by bees in a "natural" way.

Funny thing is, I have lost a bit of weight, but that's watching portion size mostly.

I've been wondering if the way we grind our flour(which has changed in the past 50-100 years believe it or not) is one of the culprits as well.

Although the real culprits are all the ready made food and snacks and lack of portion control. The calories burned standing up and making breads, cookies, and dinners aren't a large amount, but it's more activity than walking into the kitchen, grabbing a bag of Oreos, and then eating half of them in one sitting.

The starch based variety like rice. The stuff that becomes glucose. Avoid sucrose and fructose. Whole fruit is the exception with fructose because of the fiber. But avoid fruit juice and sugary drinks most of all.

Fruit juice is delicious. I refuse to believe that it can't be part of a healthy diet.

Eat a piece of whole wheat toast to make up for the lack of fiber, and limit the size or your glass. You'll be fine.

And don't use margarine on the toast. Use real butter, it won't kill you.

Cythraul: What's the 'good sugar?' And is it five times as expensive as the 'bad sugar?'

Complex carbs versus simple carbs. Simple carbs break down much more quickly, lead to a blood sugar spike that sets off the glucagoninsulin cycle, and leads to more fat production. If you take too much of it, it can have the damaging effects listed.

Simple carbs aren't bad. They have their place. They just need to be taken in moderation.

Whereas jumping on the latest health-fad-of-the-day is an informed and reasonable choice. So where are we now...fat is good again, ALL carbohydrates are bad (or was it "complex is still good"), cholesterol is back in, red meat is good again but only if it's organic...I can't keep track. I'll just keep on eating and drinking the way my hippie parents raised me.

Betcha I live longer than you do ;-)
