Meh, if the cops in my area would just get off their lazy asses and write the tickets for the blatant things in front of their faces (parking in no parking zones on streets, running red lights....) , they'd make bank. but there's no publicity for it and nothing to seize, so..........

This smacks of tattle-taleing but I do hate people that park like jerks. My ex used to take this issue into his own hands. He was (is) a notorious car keyer. Non-crip parked in a crip space? Keyed. Cut him off and stole his parking spot? Keyed. He especially loved keying the cars of entitled jerk-wads who feel it necessary to park their new Lexus across multiple spaces so they don't get dinged by other people's doors. He would probably have made a habit out of keying double parkers if he thought he could get away with it. Now THAT is vigilante justice in the parking lot.

"I am a community policer from way back," one resident said at the meeting. "I'm also one of the first code compliance volunteers in my neighborhood... Low income people like me can't even afford a cell phone, so I think if you're going to allow this you should also expand this ordinance to include the ability of the police department and code compliance to purchase smartphones for their volunteers."

Oh, right, like there aren't QUITE ENOUGH empty/available handicap parking spots ! Ridiculous.

FTFA: "There's really no better enforcement tool than our citizens policing themselves," Councilman Mike Martinez said.

For the record, Mike Martinez is a tool, and this statement is a perfect example of that.

Having been a personal assistant to a Quadriplegic in Austin, including the duty of driving her van around, I say, "YES, we need to do this."
There were far too many times where I'd pull up to HEB or even the Hospital, and some tard is parked in the Handy spot. I'd have to get out of the Van, knock on the person's window, and point to the van and the woman in the wheel chair.
Until you must park in one of those spaces, you need to keep your butt out of them.

2011-10-31 05:37:21 PM
Lakewood, WA has done something similar to this for many years. The city has a group of "deputized" civilians that can and do write tickets to owners of cars illegally parked in handicapped spaces while handicapped people make handicapped faces.

I should also say that this seems awfully similar to the concept of red-light and speed camera-issued tickets that so often seem to get struck down in court.

I wouldn't say "socialist", but it's an incredible waste of taxpayer money. If we have to pay for the phone, we're going to have to pay for their Verizon/AT&T/Sprint contract.

Throwing that statement in just makes them sound greedy and really how often are handicapped spaces actually abused? I doubt enough to justify the cost.

And for the handicapped people who may notice it more than I do, how about allowing towing of any car not in compliance. Tow truck drivers are notoriously greedy and quick to swoop in and take any car they can.

Just provide a number for anyone to call and let the wrecker write the ticket, tow the car and collect towing and storage fees.

Friend of mine who is in a wheelchair (car accident when she was 1, she'll never be out of it) finally attained a car of her own last year. She goes to a big tech school and arrived back from class to find some girl had parked in the yellow hash lines NEXT to the space, making it impossible for her to get back into the car. So she called campus security who towed her, but the girl's defense when she showed up was 'but I didn't park in the space!'.

Not sure I would agree with snitching on each and every person who parks like an idiot, but there are definitely times people need to be deterred from future stupidity.
