I feel like Matt Stafford is like Matt Ryan and Matt Schaub, everybody keeps telling me they're good, so they must be, right?

And their names are all Matt.

My Matt is at 17 and having a serviceable season that is being rightfully ignored.

Matt Stafford is really good. 19 TD, 4 INT and a QB Rating of 99.1. What's not to like?

I am still not convinced that QBR is worth a shiat. What was wrong with the old QB rating?

The people at ESPN thought Michael Vick's wasn't high enough last year.

Tim Tebow is only talked about for two reasons: it's fun to say his name, and all the crazy jesus shiat.

Espn couldn't control it, they couldn't explain it clearly, and they wanted to simplify things so they could talk about certain QBs more.

I agree. I take these sabermetrics type things with a big grain of salt. Besides I picked him up off the free agent list right after our draft and he's been my starter since Week2.

I guess just gotta hope he stays healthy.

You're forgetting the constant media cockgarbbling of the man....

I don't recall ever hearing the media be so apologetic for a QBs shortcomings. When Lynch said yesterday that the reason the Denver WRs weren't getting open was because they were used to Kyle Orton getting sacked faster than Tebow, I wanted to throw my TV into traffic.

2011-10-31 02:31:24 PM
Not a big Tebow fan (although I do hate the hype and I disliked the zealotry for him when he played in Florida), but I honestly hope that with all this news about him sucking only serves as fuel for him to try to overcome it.

I hope John Fox buys the same billboard the fans did.

You'd be a better person if you just spent 5 minutes with Tebow.

If you keep adjusting the metric to fit public perception, then the metric has no value.

Andy Dalton > Cam Newton > Tim Tebow

InferiousX: You're forgetting the constant media cockgarbbling of the man....

My wife and I played a drinking game yesterday. Everytime they said "Tim Tebow" (the full name) we drank. Mrs. Muta polished off a bottle of wine after the first half and I was on my third highball of burbon praying for 3 and outs.

2011-10-31 02:45:30 PM
I still can't get over how long Tebow's release is. A 15 yard pass from him requires a f*cking windup as if he's tying to throw a baseball 90mph+. The announcers in yesterday's games were bleating about how "shorter throws and bubble screens!" would be the answer, but bubble screens to WRs only work in the NFL if the corners are playing off, and if it doesn't take a half-hour for the ball to arrive. There's literally no reason for an opposing CB to play "off" coverage against the Broncos.

Yes, this year he's doing well, but he's never played a full season and he always seems to be hurt.

Exactly. And ESPN can make the stat look however they want it to look and mean exactly what they want it to mean so they can continue to push the teams they want to.

I hate ESPN. HATE them.

I'm pretty sure Stafford's epitaph would start with "IF he stays healthy...". In fact, those four words might be the only thing required on his tombstone for a random person to walk by it and say "hey, this must be Matt Stafford!"

FishyFred: I am still not convinced that QBR is worth a shiat. What was wrong with the old QB rating?

The old QB rating was kinda dumb too and no longer worked in the modern game where most of today's QBs would grading out better than the old greats.

I know this is pretty shocking to read, but it seems like Eli is too low on this list. I've been a hater but he's really been playing lights-out recently.

Obviously the answer is an era-adjusted QBR+ stat.

=======================================================

The fact that it's capped everywhere, the fact that you can throw a single pass and get a nearly perfect rating if it goes for a touchdown... shiat like that.

It still worked as a relative-to-the-era stat and did a good job of showing how QB-friendly the league has become.

FarkTV > Tebow

2011-10-31 03:02:13 PM
How the heck does Alex Smith wind up 24th? He's having a solid year, though the past couple games he's started missing on easy 10 yard passes.

-18.2 in the sack part of these rankings? The offensive line has been holding up alright. Apparently he's been sacked 17 times, which is more than I thought, but not terrible for 7 games. A little bad, yeah. And I get that Smith doesn't throw as much as most QBs and that probably hurts him here. But 24th? For putting up a 95.7 rating, 9-2 TD/int, and a lame but not awful 7.0 yards per attempt?

Whatever.

/Oh, this whole thing is "expected points added * number of action plays." Okay. Cool. So it actively hurts QBs who throw less often, unlike yards per attempt, which is still (along with turnovers) a better way to evaluate QBs.

2011-10-31 03:04:26 PM
Tebow is not the worst QB in the league. Yesterday was bad, but what do you expect when the offensive line doesn't block?

Having the leagues best defense factors into your missing stat. Imagine that.

How about instead of WAR like in baseball, we have WAJG (Wins Above Jeff George)?

How likely is that QB to be better than Jeff George in his mid-late career (standard QB avg)

The biggest problem with this system is obvious when one looks to the right of that "12" in the Rank column.

2011-10-31 03:10:15 PM
Tebow's Total QBR of 3.4 on 59 action plays (in Week 8) was the lowest by any QB with at least 50 action plays in a game since 2008.

Normally I'd try to insert a witty comment here, but that just about said it all.

Good good good. I think Stafford is easily my 3rd favorite QB in the league. I like watching him play.

and anyone with a brain, who wants stats beyond inane and useless total yard garbage, still goes by DVOA metrics, which kill this watered down 4th grader attempt at analysis.

2011-10-31 03:13:53 PM
Oh, and they didn't have to adjust anything to end up with this. Tebow happened to have a great few minutes playing against the Chargers because Norv Turner is an idiot and thinks the Chargers don't have to keep trying in the second half to dominate.

Since then, Tebow has had more opportunity to suck, and has.

Similarly, the previous time this was posted, it only covered the last game. Rodgers has been the top guy all year overall.

Matt Stafford has played 21 games total. That includes games he was hurt and didn't finish. Citation provided.

He's had OTA's and such for a few years so he should certainly understand the offenseive scheme. That being said, he's basically only played 1 full year of football. Pretty good stuff for that little playing time.

There's nothing to hate about him if he's going out there and producing. My dislike for him is when he's farking up - and he's not doing that right now. Good for him.
