(MSP Business Journal) Interesting Target announces plans to open stores at midnight on Thanksgiving in an attempt to get shoppers to spend more time in their stores on Black Friday. Of course, time is pretty much the only thing Americans have to spend this Christmas   (bizjournals.com) divider line 164

Black Friday shopping is stupid. You're wasting your holiday standing outside in the cold with people who're probably all diseased, or insane, or looking to kill you.

Black...because of the darkness I see when in said coma....

In my opinion, the day after Thanksgiving is the biggest shoppping day of the year.

As someone who is diseased, insane, and looking to kill you, I'm getting a kick out of this reply.

Our mall is doing the whole midnight open thing too. And to add to the retardation, I am watching them hang Christmas decorations right now.

I'm betting this idea was set up by someone who had never worked on a retail floor and won't be working on Black Friday

I love Black Friday, though I barley ever buy anything. I just like looking at all the Christmas displays. As long as you're not standing in line the Christmas spirit is in full effect on Black Friday.

Walmart has the highest weight to shopper ratio which raises the damage coefficient. They are unequaled.

Macy's is opening at Midnight too apparently. Staying open until 11 pm, or 23 hours straight. next year, they'll need to stretch that to 11:30 so they can "beat" this year's numbers... Eventually this plan to 'raise' numbers is bound to fail, so I'm laughing at some level.

I really do hate the whole "shut up and CONSUME" mentality though.

You want good "black Friday " deals? Shop online Thanksgiving Day. Amazon and all major retail has great online deals. No leaving the house, gift wrap options, ship directly to recipient. Easy.

Speaking as a broke college student who recently escaped a retail job for a much better paying internship I'm looking forward to sleeping in on that particular Friday for the first time in a couple of years.

Yeah, I'm good without forced corporate holidays. I don't want to deal with these people, and I'm too poor to justify buying a load of crap I don't need. If I could afford it then I'd value my time enough not to be out there at midnight.

However, I'm betting on a bumper year for dead & injured people. Retailers are desperate.

I don't get Black Friday AT ALL.

My wife and I tried Friday shopping about 5 or 6 years ago, it was a nightmare of no parking, pushy people, hot stores, long lines and the only things we were looking for were out-of-stock.

Screw that, everyone else can go while I am home watching family videos....

I used to do it in the mid 90's when only a handful of stores did it. KB Toys, Walmart, Kmart and a few others. There was a no line to get in and you were in and out of the store in an hour. They also had pallets of whatever was on sale. Now you have to camp out the night before, and pray you get one of the tickets to the doorbuster, which only 3-4 exist. Most of the sales are better in late December anyway.

Two hours of my life and the stress isn't worth the "savings" on outdated electronics or gimmicky bullshiat me, nor anyone in my life needs. If I really want to gift anything that's on sale - i'll pony up the extra ten bucks.

No, the best deals are on Cyber-Monday. You know, the first work day after the Thanksgiving weekend when everybody gets back to work and can take advantage of the high speed internet at work that they don't have at home so they can shop online?

So much this. I'm to the point now where about 90% of all of gifts are bought online. No parking hassles, long lines, or unpleasant employees/shoppers. I got my wife on this trend to, who last year said how much less stressful the holidays are when we aren't out shopping every bloody weekend.

Last year the local Target store wouldn't let the Salvation Army collect outside of its storefront. The reason given was because the Salvation Army wouldn't cough up a percentage of the "take" to Target.

I would choke Walmart with Target's carcass if I could.

I used to work in a retail bookstore when I was in college. I always volunteered to work Black Friday and Christmas Eve in exchange for having the day after Christmas off.

Black friday and Christmas Eve were all sales. Helping people find things and ringing them up at the register was easy as pie. Long lines didn't bother me because I could work the registers quickly and the day flew by.

The day after Christmas, however, was all returns, exchanges, and gift certificates. These were a complete pain in the ass because of the register/paperwork involved. You would get people trying to "return" books that had been in their house for years, people who would wait in line for 20 minutes to come up to the counter with a gift certificate for another store (and they would yell at ME about it), ugh, it was miserable, and I only did it once.

I was a manager for one of the big boxes. Every year I got more and more pissed when we received three of the $29 tv's and four of the $59 Playstations, all of which would be gone in two minutes.

Black Friday sucked to be a retailer. And the early morning stuff sucked worse. Stay home.

Usually I agree, however last year we got a new baby bed set for essentially 40% off retail. Toys-R-Us generally has some really good deals, if you can stand the lines.
