No Blair Witch?

Snapper Carr: No Blair Witch?

Cam here to say that.

Also, Paranormal Activity should be added to that list. What a pile of horse shiate that was.

In fact any "found footage" film should be on that list.

How about overrated, dumb, and unscary: Suspiria.

At least something happened in Paranormal Activity. Blair Witch was nothing more than 3 extremely unlikeable people walking in the woods and yelling at each other.

No horror movies have ever been scary and your favorite horror movie sucks.

I win at hipster.

Two cheesy classics in there: The Stuff, and Attack of the Killer Shrews.

/Surprised "Food of the Gods" wasn't in there.

To be frank, I can only think of two movies that actually frightened me enough that I had trouble sleeping - possibly due to the fact that I watched them both as a child - The Shining and The Exorcist.

Although certain movies have had their moments like this one

4.bp.blogspot.com

for example, too many movies rely on fake scare (which actually ruin any sense of suspense that good horror relies on ) and gore (gore is fun but not scary).

How did you watch both as a child? The Shining was released in 1980 and The Exorcist was released in 1973.

There are these magical devices known as a TV and a VCR that allowed you to watch movies well after they'd been released in the theater.

Saw the Shining when it was new and the Exorcist was either out on cable or Betamax (don't remember exactly, I just remember seeing it on a TV screen the first time) around the same time - I was probably 10 or 11 and had a pretty vivid imagination which only made them scarier.

Paranormal activity was so scary it made my wife physically ill. Wait... no, that was just the constant "shaky cam" effect.

Jeepers Creepers was a pile of awful that belongs on that list.

I liked the first Paranormal Activity, but thought it was more creepy than scary. I didn't see the sequels because it looked like just the same thing, only with more "throw shiate around the room" moments. Also, any movie where they show you audience reactions in the ads is bad.

Exorcist 3. An underrated movie with a wonderfully creepy performance by Brad Dourif.

The 13th would have been Thirteen Ghosts. It did have Shannon Elizabeth, though, so there was that.

DigitalCoffee: The Sixth Sense

See, cause I thought the Sixth Sense was the opposite. I wouldn't exactly call it a horror movie but it was scary to me. The dead little girl, the dead hanging people, basically everyone dead except Willis creeped me out and horror movies aren't usually scary to me.

Spoiler Alert above

That movie wasn't scary but it had great sets and make-up FX.

I'm curious as to what people who hate Paranormal Activity find scary. Say what you will about the 2 sequels (I liked them, especially the third), but the first is pretty damn original, well acted in that acting-like-theyre-not-acting kind of way, and the stationary camera provides a decent degree of realism that most horror films lack.

Oh, definitely. It was a very well made movie from a production side that just wasn't scary(outside of a few jumpy moments). And Matthew Lillard was actually pretty good in it.

Orgasmatron138: Jeepers Creepers was a pile of awful that belongs on that list.

The 1st half was pretty good, until they revealed the killer was a BEM.

And as far as Thinner goes, it had a good concept of a modern criminal vs. old evil, but never went anywhere with it. Kind of a creepy ending, though.

I'll say this for it, at least it had a stationary camera setup and it didn't have a guy carrying around a camera, still inexplicably shooting while being chased by witches/aliens/Godzilla.

Husband & I tried to watch Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation. We figured it had Matthew McConaughey & Renee Zellwiger--how bad could it be? Well, it could be pretty awful. Horrible acting, awful dialogue--we turned it off after 20 minutes. When you're hoping your entire cast is chopped to bits by the 15-minute mark, it's not a good sign.

I'm also going to add the 70's Creature Feature cut of 'Phantasm' to the list. CBS (I think it was CBS) had it so chopped down that it was a laugh-fest. Oooooooo! Look! It's that midget creeping around again! Kinda like the Hamburgler in the McDonald's commercials at the time. *robble* *robble* *robble* Saw the uncut version a number of years later and it was not bad, but the TV cut will always stick with me.

Well, that's why I'll grant the sequels--I'm able to suspend my disbelief for a guy whose first priority is grabbing the camera, and second is saving his family, but I understand how others can't.

GimpyNip: The acting in Paranormal Activity was good? No it wasn't. That movie is 90 minutes of some homely chick becoming increasingly more shrill.

I ask again, then: what's an actually scary movie?

Exorcist 3.

Ah, thank you. Even saw that one in the theaters.

Exorcist III was an okay movie but, cheesis, that one scene (pictured above) . . .

What the f*ck is that? I haven't watched that movie in years and still remember how disturbing that was. Was any explanation ever given as to who or what that was? Was it a possessed nun? Some nameless demonic entity that only appeared for a split second of the story? *shudder* I don't remember it ever being explained which probably enhanced its creepiness.

And while I agree with feanorn that "Suspiria" isn't particularly scary, it is plenty dark and disturbing.

And, yes, "Paranormal Activity" sucks seven different kinds of dick. If you were scared by that, then you need to spend your Social Security checks on different forms of entertainment.

Jack Frost... horror movie

Best unscary movie ever

And Shannon Elizabeth gets rapes with a carrot.

I don't get the Paranormal Activity hate. I really enjoyed the first one, the 2nd one sucked (2 hours of watching a pool cleaner crawl out of the pool?) and the third one was kinda creepy. And I don't scare easily. I like that they don't rely on the "jump out and scare you" stupidity (too much) and try for the creepy factor.

Biggest problem for me: you know what might be good to show in a monster movie? The f*cking monster.

For this movie to be made for $20,000 or whatever it was is really impressive. When considering that, the movie is quite a feat.

But then for people to act like it's something profoundly terrifying? Bullshiat. On a scale of 1 to 10, I'd give it around a 4 in terms of scares, and maybe a 6 for everything else.

Here are some good scary movies, IMHO:

The Exorcist
Nightmare on Elm Street (none of the sequels, though)
The Dead movies (sort of scary but are more gory)
Descent
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (if you've never seen it, it's not as gory or violent as the name implies; but it's a great scary movie)
The Mist

Probably forgetting a few. But those are excellent scary flicks.

It was a possessed mental patient, similar to the one that was sent to kill the detective's daughter.

GimpyNip: Paranormal Activity was terrible.

Wicker Man 'best to avoid'? I think not. That movie is hilarious. Not scary but it's still amusing and quotable.

Rob Zombie's Halloween remakes are 'best to avoid'.

Would FARKERS really find any movie scary? At the very least you need to have empathy and spiritual beliefs of which most FARKERS have neither.

Original Wicker Man was terrifying.

Oddly enough, yesterday wife and I got to see the original film, then the remake later. We both liked the original. Whoever was the set designer on the remake, I'll have what he's having.

My daughter dragged me to Paranormal Activity 3 over the weekend.

I hate scary movies. Luckily, it wasn't scary.

"Leprechaun"
There's also that Leprechauns are supposed to be mischievous, not evil.

"The Killer Shrews"
I remember seeing that on TV when I was around 11 or so. Even then, I was like "Oh come on! Those are obviously dogs with horribly done costumes!"

I think Apollo 18 may be the worst "scary" movie I've ever seen.

I also can't decide where Sleepaway Camp falls on my list. So bad it's funny, but those last few seconds are just....

I don't actually find films scary. Never have. My fiancé on the other hand is shiat scared of them. She wouldn't go to the bathroom at night on her own for about a week or so after we watched it at home (this was only about 3 weeks ago).

Amusingly she spent half the time (all the night time scenes) hiding behind a cushion with me having to tell her what was going on. As I pointed out, that was next to useless as fark all occurred on the screen for most of the film and everything "scary" was bangs and crashes etc.

I just don't get it. Maybe I've got to much of a logical mind and don't believe in anything supernatural at all, so the films have nothing to play on.
