My dad grew up in a French household in the 30's/40's kids drinking wine at meals was normal.

I'm pleased that my tenuous grasp of language was able to interpret.

We have wine with dinner every night, I don't consider that drinking.
19 in a week is a bit much tho.
Where do they get these figures?

That's clearly child abuse. A ration of a liter hard alcohol a day is the least someone can be expected to operate on.

I'm going to get shiatfaced while watching horror movies today so I'm getting a kick out of this thread. The only question is whether to get gin or vodak.

Same with my best friend's Dad but with Italians. This isn't as far-fetched or shocking as it seems. It teaches kids responsible drinking at a young age instead of shoving them out on their own when they turn 21.

I don't see much support for that very common argument. There are those who drink their entire young lives and still end up alcoholics, there are those who start at 21, 25, 30 and never have a problem drinking responsibly, and there are people who have drank responsibly for decades that end up becoming massive drunks later.

It may have something to do with booze being a highly effective, legal depressant that those wanting to get away from their existing and resulting problems can imbibe in excess to reach their temporary goal.

It'll really bust your bum when you find out that they're drinking 19 Ira Glasses of wine a week. Not only can he hold his booze, it's disturbing to watch those little kids drink from his sangria regurgitations like baby birds.

Notice the article doesn't actually say how many 12 year olds are drinking 28 alcohol units per week. Just "large numbers".

But it can't be that big, since Around 11% of Year 10 pupils, aged 14 and 15, had supped more than 10 units in the past week.

Googling the survey shows it is 4% of 12 year olds with 28+ alcohol units per week.

That doesn't seem shockingly large to me, but I remember junior high.

Lots of fuzzy numbers there.

The article talks about "units", which is a British measure for "tiny bit of alcohol".

For example, from wiki: "One litre of typical Oktoberfest beer (5.5% to 6%) contains 5.5 to 6 units of alcohol."

1 Unit = 10mL Ethanol, or 0.5 US Standard Drinks
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unit_of_alcohol

So, that would be 5 drinks per week. If they weren't twelve, I'd commend them for their commitment to heart health (1)

Which is even more confusing since TFA suggests that 21 units = about a pint of lager.

And then you can always complicate it some more by looking at %/volume vs %/weight.

Well I'm still confused to the change to binge drinking. 4 or more drinks in a row is now binge drinking. I always thought a binge had to last at least two days and interfere with life, not what a normal person would do on a Friday night.

Just means that every 3 shots you need to finish your soda chaser ... that way, you'll never do 4 in a row...

Vegemite: I always thought a binge had to last at least two days and interfere with life, not what a normal person would do on a Friday night.

I'd wager against that assumption. About a third of American adults don't drink anything at all right off the bat. Most people don't drink every day, and I'd wager few people have more than one or two drinks at a time on a weekly basis.

Just reflecting on the people around me, other than myself, I can only think of four other people I know who drink at least once a day on average. And those people are the only people I know who drink more than me. Two of them are alcoholic family members who routinely get completely smashed on the weekend, and neither of the other two regularly have more than two or three drinks in an evening that I know of. I very rarely have more than three in a day and most days I only have one or two.

Obviously, your circle of friends and family are different than the people I know, but the point is that heavy drinkers seem to tend to vastly overestimate what is "typical" drinking in the rest of the population.

Regardless, the guideline isn't set at 4 based on any sort of expectation of normalcy. It's set at 4 because that's about the point where you start seeing significant negative health effects whether it's what everyone is doing or not. "Normal" people in America eat a bunch of fast food and junk food snacks too, doesn't mean it's healthy. Normal and healthy are two different things that rarely intersect when talking about Americans.

The sentence about drink preference between boys and girls should have cider written in capitals, considering it costs about £2.50 for 1.5L.

When I was 14 I drank a bottle and fell in the canal. A couple of months ago I drank one, fell into a girl then fell in the canal.

Bingo... I am sure the kids are just being silly and filling out the questionnaires with false answers as a prank... people used to do this in school all the time and say they smoked crack & stuff.

It's possible they weren't lying but there is no way to really know. There is no good way to figure out how much these kids really are drinking...

That a program doesn't completely eliminate something doesn't mean that it isn't successful.

From what I've seen, a culture of responsible drinking curtails the worst aspects of drinking, it doesn't eliminate them. You don't get the rates of massive alcohol poisoning in 21 year olds that you do in the states.

This.

See a lot of toddlers in restaurants with a 50/50 glass of wine/water. By the time they are teens, alcohol is no big deal. Works quite well.
