Breaking Bad's awesomeness aside, my hs chemistry teacher told us all that one of her good friends lost his teaching job because he got caught making LSD. It was during the "use chemistry only for good" speech.

This guy reminds me of my high school chemistry teacher. His nickname was Pyro Pete, he used the blast shield a lot during class demonstrations. I still remember fondly the day he put a toy stuffed mole into a beaker and how the ensuing chemical reaction launched clear across the lab. Why a mole? I remember the demonstration having something to do with molarity.

Disappointed by the misleading headline.

It's not a prerequisite, but it helps.

Agree.

But using the explosion to blow out the fragments was still fun.

There must be dozens of different versions of this "experiment" on YouTube.

A google of pumpkin "calcium carbide" turns up lots of hits (maybe starting in 2004) but I don't know the initial developer of this "experiment".

Whoever that was everybody else seems to copy. There are plenty of things besides calcium carbide one could use but I haven't seen any examples.

I did, in fact, have a science teacher that cool. Also crazy. He was more than a little bit crazy.

Oddly, he was also a senior student in the martial arts classes I was taking at the time, so I occasionally got to spar with him.

There are three types of chemistry teachers:

1. Those who like to use chemistry to make drugs
2. Those who like to use chemistry to make explosions
3. Those who like to do both

I am trolling a bit, but I'm being honest. If most people saw how many naps the teachers at my school take at their desks, they'd probably shiat. I came from a private company, so I was horrified at first. Now I just appreciate having a lot of time.

Nap time is in their union contract. They used to have sexy time with the hot student in the contract, but they met too much resistance during the last contract negotiations so it was dropped. They had a choice between pensions and student sexy time. The vote was 51% for the pension.

As a teacher, my comment is "you get what you pay for" (pardon the dangling participle),
You want better instruction? Pay more. Period. It is rare to have a creative, energetic and dedicated teacher that is willing to work for what they pay us. That kind of skill is better used in industry and getting paid better.

That's interesting, considering that private school teachers make less money, on average, than public school teachers do, and yet private school students regularly outperform public school students. That would seem to cast some doubt on your assertion that "higher paid = better".

Definitely true. We have a teacher that always shows up late, wings half of his classes, and skips meetings, but nobody says a thing. The principle doesn't seem to care at all. I'd love to see that dude gone. I blame unions.

untaken_name: and yet private school students regularly outperform public school students.

And I'm sure that has nothing to do with the fact that private schools accept only the best and brightest students, Or the fact that parents who are willing to pay extra for their children's schooling clearly value education and are more likely to be involved, Or the fact that private schools can simply refuse admission and/or expel the kinds of problem students the public schools are forced to deal with.

Also in Pennsylvania, private schools are exempt from state standards testing so you actually can not compare them directly since they don't have to spend 75% of their time teaching that stupid test.
