For a Hunter S.Thompson flick,The Rum Diary was surprisingly...languid,Giovanni Ribisi's superb performance notwithstanding,so it's neither shocking nor poetic,subby.

"Gee, honey, what can we take the kids to see on Halloween weekend? A complex, profanity-studded film about a Hunter Thompson character lost in a haze of booze and delirium; or a fun animated 3-D romp about a Spanish cat with a sword?"

I mean, really, people.

I saw In Time. What a piece of shiat. Some dumbass bartender the other night mentioned how it was awesome (compared it to Inception) and then today we decided to see it on a whim. I failed to read the reviews prior to going in but honestly I didn't think it'd be as terrible as it was. Bad acting, lame storyline, no action/suspense whatsoever except for like two car chase scenes and very little character development.

wow, they spent fifty million dollars making "The Rum Diary".

it's a nice story; i read it many years ago. not sure there is all that much about it that begs to be put onto the screen.

was the fifty million all spent on rum, or was there a little left afterwards for whores?

though I want to see it, I did find it a bit odd it was being marketed as a comedy. I recall the book being pretty straight-forward and not much of a kindred spirit to Fear and Loathing...

johnny depp was terrible in fear and loathing, helping to make the movie terrible.
i'm sure his magic touch is all over this one too.

johnny depp is peter pan, not hunter s thompson.
christaroni!

Too bad. The previews looked great, but then the reviews came out and basically said what you did. Surprised that it isn't a better movie, but I'll wind up renting it instead of going to the movies.

Have there ever been any spinoffs better than the original? I'm worried I'm not going to enjoy Puss in Boots because I'll compare it to Shrek.

Then again, I can make any movie seem like genius compared to Shrek 2 or 3, hm...

Agreed. There were certainly some funny moments, but I definitely wouldn't classify it as a comedy. I'm convinced lately that the marketing folks for the movie industry are a bit retarded though. They seem to have difficulty anything that isn't a cookie cutter movie, and this one isn't.

Personally speaking, I liked it. It wasn't fantastic, a bit toned down from the book from what I recall of it. But I didn't think the book was fantastic either, but I liked it too. If you're going in expecting some blockbuster or the like you're going to be disappointed.

I thought it was worth the price of admission anyways.

I went and saw Rum Diaries this weekend. I really liked Fear and Loathing, and I went in wanting to like it. It was... Meh. It had some very strong performances, but the story was kind of slow, and it was nowhere near as good as the first. Save your money and wait for this to come out to rent. I wanted to head out to the movies, and I'm not a fan of the PA series, and with no kids, I didn't feel like catching Puss in Boots.

Animated cats that stand on two legs creep me out. They look like starving children with distended bellies, tiny limbs, and big heads.

2011-10-31 01:07:31 AM
I saw "In Time". Not a great movie or one that I'm going to recommend but I enjoyed it well enough. The premise was a lot better than the execution and it was a lot more low budget than the trailer made it look.

2011-10-31 01:09:00 AM
I like the fear and Loathing film, but I don't think it was what anyone would call a commercial success. I'm glad they made Rum Diaries into a movie. That said, I can't say I'm surprised that it's not lighting up the box office. Part of Hunter Thompson's appeal is that he is definitely not mainstream. If they tried to tone him down to make his stuff more commercially appealing, what's the point? If they tried to play up Thompson's weirdness, they shouldn't be surprised if general audiences are not flooding into the theaters in droves.

FTA: But the solid opening for "Puss in Boots" was much needed for DreamWorks. The company said Tuesday its net income fell by half in the third quarter as its early summer release, "Kung Fu Panda 2," did not haul in as much at the box office as last year's "Shrek Forever After."

Shrek 4 made more $$ than KFP 2? I am disappoint.

/KFP 2 was pretty good - I actually liked it a bit better than the first one
//Shrek 4, like Shrek 3, was okay at best - nowhere near as good as Shrek 1 or 2

I wanna see the Rum Diary, but not in a theater.

I think films like that deserve to be watched with alcohol and a sad sense of loneliness.

Was okay, but drawn out and while there were some great scenes, the whole thing was pretty blasé. Giovanni Ribisi was a stand out though. Got me to read the book though, which, of course, is proving far superior. I don't envy them, having to try to make a 'low key' movie after Terry Gilliam's take on Fear and Loathing, which is usually people's only experience with Hunter S. Thompson (I've a Gonzo Fist tattoo and almost every time I show it, people stare blankly even after I say it's a Thompson reference. Mention Fear and Loathing though and then "OH YEAH!"). Clearly a lot of people were going to go in expecting that, which the marketing people certainly didn't help. Worth seeing if you're a fan of Thompson, could stand to wait for DVD though.

/"There's something poetic about Johnny Depp and Hunter S. Thompson losing out to an animated cat at the box office" WTH is poetic about it?

The TV ads are terrible. I had no idea this had anything to do with Hunter S Thompson - they make it look like the movie is a knockoff of Romancing the Stone, for crying out loud.
