The only good thing that came out of 2 weeks helping clean up after hurricane Katrina was the cases of MREs I brought home.

Here. Anything you want can be caffeinated as you see it fit. ANYTHING. EVEN BACON.

Just don't add scoops of it. Use a .001g scale.

Oh, and caffeine sucks. There's much better stimulants out there.

Right now? 4-FA is the best one, AFASWIMK, that's not on the DEA's shiat-list. Just be careful with it, and don't use it every damn day. Stimulants can be used responsibly, but they're HIGHLY ADDICTIVE.

I joined the Army in 1986 so I had the displeasure of being introduced to MRE's with things such as the pork patty, ham and chicken loaf and frankfurter with beans. By the time I left in 1994, they had improved greatly and we had things like spaghetti and meatballs, tuna with noodles and omelet with ham. While better, there were still only a few that I could actually say that I didn't mind being stuck with.

Being the curious guy that I am, I recently bought a 3 pack of the most recent MRE's from ebay and ended up with chicken fajita, mediterranean chicken and beef brisket. I was farking amazed at how good they were as well as some of the cool things like the ration heater and hot beverage bags. Anybody serving in the military today needs to think long and hard before biatching about the MRE they're eating. They're a gourmet compared to what they used to be.

Slim jims arent jerky, theyre just a dried sausage, like pepperoni.

The only thing I don't like about MRE's is it takes days to pass them and when you do, it's like pinching out a core sample.

Otherwise, urrah.

I'm still a fan of the beef stew, with jalapeño cheese and crackers. That right there is a farking delicacy out in the field!

My high school science teacher allowed us to stay after school to clean up his class for extra credit and he'd occasionally break out MREs to feed us. I quite enjoyed the spaghetti and meatballs

Vegemite: jalapeño cheese and crackers.

The cheese and crackers were always one of my favorite things. All three of mine only had the regular cheese spread, I've never tasted the jalapeno.

The jalapeño cheese is excellent. I would trade all the sweets in my MRE to get it.

Dude...I went active in 1980 on my 17th Bday after joining when I was 16 on the delayed entry program (graduated over a year early) and we ate C-rats canned in 1967. MREs are sweeeeet!

Back then the man who got the meatballs with BBQ sauce was king. BTW, you forgot the dehydrated part on the pork patty. Went well with the foam peaches.

I was just about to mention that. I was a kid when they still had the regular MRE that had dehydrated food in it. The fruit was the worst.

You do know, of course, that the MRE was designed specifically not to be passed through the human digestive tract in any reasonable amount of time. The idea was to be able to feed soldiers in the field and for them never to have to shiat until the mission was over and they were back in base. Then they'd be given half a barrel of olive oil apiece and two guys would get to use the barrel to eliminate all the MRE's they ate during their time in combat.

It's true. I have studies.

I think we'll all agree that the single biggest advancement in MRE technology was when they started putting the little bottles of tobasco in them.

This.

My dad was career Army. He was SF and *always* gone, but we ate a hell of a lot of C-RATS (the old school kind with "chocolate cake" that could give someone a concussion if you threw it at them). When MREs came into our house, we were SO impressed.

Now, I live in Alaska and we buy MREs to take with us when we camp and to keep for emergencies. It's farking gourmet compared to what my dad had to eat as a soldier.

I always thought that most of the T rations were good. Those were the big metal trays that had multiple servings of chicken, lasagna, roast beef and other things. The ultimate was the coffee can sized containers full of precooked bacon. We used to steal those from the mess tent and make bacon sandwiches. Delicious!

Ah, I was probably still drooling in my soppy cup when you were doing that. Never had c-rats. I mean we still had stores of c-rats but we never actually used them for food.
