They're rodents, you purist, and they breed like crazy. They're close enough to rats to fit the description.

Also, you can't eradicate any kind of rodent with traps, poison, or (like in this one episode of "Swamp Men" or somesuch on Nat Geo) trying to plink them to death one at a time. There's freaking 20 million of the beasts in Louisiana alone--I think they're here to stay.

Wop rat was the racist term for the noble Tuscan on Tatooine

OK, so Luke's family are just poor moisture farmers, right? So how can they afford a high-tech toy like a T-16 for Luke? If you look at the specs on wookieepedia, it seems like a lot nicer ride than their crappy old land speeder. If Luke inherited his father's affinity for tech, he might have built it out of spare parts, but you're talking about something with an ion engine, pressurized cabin, weapons system, holographic display, etc. etc. Not something you just dig up out of a junkyard, if you know what I mean.

I don't read the stupid books they made out of the movies, so maybe it's explained there. Seems like Luke's a bit of a fibber to me, though.

Also according to Wookipedia:
"The Beggar's Canyon womp rat reproduce at an alarming rate. Once it reproduced to such a point that the population could not be kept in check, and womp rats were hunting Jawas and raiding storehouses. The Imperial prefect of Tatooine and the Affiliated Moisture Farmers then passed a bounty ordinance of ten credits per rat. Luke Skywalker and his friend Biggs Darklighter got enough womp rats to upgrade their T-16 skyhoppers and have enough money for the Academy. "

Someone once told me all snipers are rednecks who grew up shooting squirrels. I guess Luke was one of them? I bet Obi Wan was "forcing" cash to young Luke too.

"Snipers" as in high precision rifle shooters legitimately employed in military or police roles, or "snipers" as in criminal whackjobs that like to sit in clock towers or the trunks of vehicles and murder random people that happen to wander into their sights?

Swamp rats?

Why would they want to eradicate the majority of people in South Louisiana?

Alrighty then. I wasn't sure if the statement was supped to be urban pansie pejorative or an expression of redneck pride.

Squirrel is farking delicious. I let mine sit in the slow cooker for 5 or 6 hours then boned them out and tossed the meat into some dirty rice. Texture like dark meat chicken and a flavor like very slightly gamey beef.

You just have to be careful not to let the hair get everywhere.

Everyone's entitled to an opinion. I myself like chicken gizzards. But I ain't eating squirrel until I run out of a lot of other things.

Heh, my dad is a redneck who grew up shooting squirrels. I've never seen him miss; the rifle is like part of his body. Maybe it has nerves attached to his eyes.

Based on my experience in the food service industry, I know how to drive them to extinction:

1) Convince foodies that nutria are cheap, delicious, and nutritious fish-like creatures (nutria-nutritious!).
2) Foodies rush en masse to eat them, and like almost every other fish in the last 40 years they become endangered.
3) You know the rest

2011-10-30 08:27:56 PM
They're edible, right?

Cheap protein. How about the government kill them and serve them as prison chow, or something.

2011-10-30 09:28:01 PM
robmilmel: 3) You know the rest

The price of their meat goes up past 15 bucks a pound and some restaurants start selling counterfeit nutria that's just capybara or squirrel with a bunch of sauce on it so the foodies can't tell the difference?
