So you didn't need to get this wonderful phone to get their glorified talking Google app?

\seriously, how hard is it to self-text notes and use your phone's internet to find things around you?

FriarReb98: \seriously, how hard is it to self-text notes and use your phone's internet to find things around you?

Well, you have to take your phone out of your pocket, for starters. And why on earth would you "self-text" notes. That seems like the absolute worst way to take notes on a phone.

//SimpleNote FTW.

Before this devolves into the typical fanboi/hater flamewar.

No, you don't need Siri. Yes, a combination of Google and use of the calendar will do 90% of the things you want Siri to do, except make a few geeky in-jokes. No, voice recognition technology is not new.

But Goddamn it, you have to respect Apple for the marketing genius of taking all of those things, rolling them into one usable piece of software that doesn't regularly glitch out, misunderstand you, or make you speak like you're talking to a dimwitted 9 year old who barely speaks English, and make you think that it's God's gift to technology.

With Siri you don't? Serious question.

On Siri screenshots, for voice commands it shows confirmation of what you just asked it to do, which is nice. But would you trust it sight unseen?

When you factor in software limitations plus variations in your own voice plus background noise, I don't trust any voice command system to send a text message or set an important alarm without me reviewing it first.

By the way, where are all the Apple fanboys who biatched about Microsoft gratuitously disabling Windows features so they could charge more for different versions? How is pulling the App for non-4S devices any different?

2011-10-30 01:21:31 PM
Don't worry. Apple will prevent these older devices from authenticating properly with their servers and all will be right with the world once again.

Just be a good little consumer and buy the latest and greatest capitalist toy. Then you can enjoy true freedom and happiness. At least until the next iGadget comes along.

Because we fanboys know what beta software is and why a company would only like to run it on their latest hardware. Unlike MS and their constant hardware/software fiascos.

Well... it reads it back to you.

Good.

Now I'll just have to wait a couple weeks until they iron out the details and make it available to the masses.

This looks like a good reason to finally jailbreak the thing.

PDANet with it's "Hide Tether" option is a good reason to jailbreak the iPhone :)

Never mind that it works great on iPhone 4, and I'm sure on the iPad 1&2 as well.

Does it hurt to flail like that?

Not entire text messages, in the demos I've seen. Is there a setting for that you can enable?

"Siri, please text my wife that I'm picking up a gallon of milk at the corner store."

"OK, 'I am licking up a gallon of ilk withe the older whore.' Your text has been sent."

Spell much idiot boy?

You do know that Siri isn't actually on the phone like a regular app. The phone is just the conduit to the server. The software is in beta On The Server. Why would a company open up a beta program to everyone in the first place. Name one company that does that?
When one buys a 4S they are opting in on the beta. Understand now idiot boy?

Step 1: Release full software to the public as an incentive to purchase a product.
Step 2: Call it a "beta" until it's a passable product that's actually worth anyone's time.
Step 3: Uh, alright.

I don't understand. Straight out of the box:

I get a text.
"Read text"
"random text"
"reply"
"what would you like to say?"
"random text also"
"you can review or send"
"review"
"anthem sex wall pole"
"edit"
"RANDOM TEXT ALSO"
"you can review or send"
"review"
"random text also"
"send"

Normally, though, its good. its only when you mash words together, that it gets confused.

For instance, "4S" = "forest" if you don't enunciate.

Apple's original Siri demonstration video showed it being used by a blind user to send a text message.

She dictated a message. Siri read it back to her and then asked her should it be sent or canceled.

As a happy owner of a 3GS, I couldn't care less that it doesn't have Siri on it. What happened to simply using a phone for the core functions of texting and tweeting and checking my email?

I'm still looking for this spelling error, or do you seriously not know the word "flail?"

The article didn't really answer whether or not Siri could run fast enough on an iPhone 4; if you have heavy background processing, I bet it would glitch out on the voice recognition.

The iPhone 4S has a dual core processor, so that should alleviate the problem.

solokumba: Because we fanboys know what beta software is and why a company would only like to run it on their latest hardware. Unlike MS and their constant hardware/software fiascos.

Also with Apple in particular, they got some hate from people who were too quick to download iOS 4 to older phones that weren't really able to handle it well. The phones upgraded but slowed down spectacularly (or in some cases just quit working) and people were scrambling to figure out how to roll back, etc.

Surely this time they're just trying to be more conservative.

i44.tinypic.com

on so many levels.

Siri was in Apple's App store for multiple devices until the 4S came out.

Siri being mostly server-side is all the more reason it should be available on all devices.

Calling the existing 4S implementation a "beta" isn't exactly a good defense of the product either.

I understand perfectly--that's some epic flail you're doing right there.

OK...now I can see that one way or another you can get it to read what you wrote back to you.

Still, as LikeTheSearchEngine described, this doesn't help with words or phrases that sound similar, so I still wouldn't trust the message to go out sight unseen. You still have to see the message to experience it exactly how the recipient will, unless you know they're just going to use Siri to read the message too. Like I originally said though, that's not a criticism of Siri specifically, just voice dictation in general.

WAT? Methinks you only own phones from 10 years ago. Marketing genius? Not even close. Just like the "status bar notifications" they are behind the curve, and try and make up for it with smoke and mirrors, as usual.
