I'm sure the taxpayers of Evanston will be happy to know there are people with nothing better to do than waste time on Twitter on the payroll.

So each and everytime they call 911 it will be broadcast to the whole world?

I see no bad side to that.[/sartalics]

There is a HUGE misconception that it has to be 140 characters or less.
I routinely send text messages way above 140 characters. The system automatically breaks them up into 140 character blocks when sending, but I've received 140 character plus messages that have been put back together.
The 140 character argument is a misnomer.
What would bother me is that you have some kid sending a 911 PSAP a text message written in "text speak" and the 911 call taker would have to translate it to figure out what it says.

I wouldn't worry about dispatch not understanding anybody's tweet/text. You can't understand half of them with voice either. Most of you don't even know where you are, let alone know what's going on.

And by the time it gets to my pager, so we can go on the call, it's going to be a a surprise party anyway.

I wouldn't be worried about it either, since - according to the article - that's not what's happening.

Sudlow: I'm sure the taxpayers of Evanston will be happy to know there are people with nothing better to do than waste time on Twitter on the payroll.

Police are hoping that it prompts some people to call the city of Evanston's 311 non-emergency line instead of dialing 911 for any trivial matter.

Plus it takes like 20 seconds to tweet the details of a ten minute phone callI doubt this will be any problem, but a great benefit if they can reduce retard calls by any amount. Doesn't sound as good an idea as the police department that was allowing non-emergency calls to be texted to them instead though, so people wouldn't clog the lines.

Subby apparantly is having trouble with the definition of the word from.

Police dispatchers are going to be doing the tweeting, not the other way around (though there are towns that do accept text messages to 911 which is not as dumb of an idea as some would have you think).

This is a good thing as it's opening up govt records that much more and will show people the dumb stuff that people call in about.

People will always dial 911 for any trivial matter. It's easier than looking up a 7-digit number or a Twitter account. Nothing will change here.

That's pretty much the whole point of this. This area has a 311 non-emergency service. 311 is pretty easy to remember... just 1 new digit to know.

the humour level of Twitter-jokes never really advanced that far, did it? it's as if people started to take "tweets" reverentially instead of seeing the inherent mockery of quick-quip thinking. somehow, the joke was lost on the people and they just spent less energy thinking and more time believing. such a shame because the funny pathetique of Twitter is just so self-defeating at the outset that really it should be such a breeze to mock it that they could be thematic gems of comedy brilliance - insulting Twitter should be one of the long-running golden headlines of Fark.

My department's not set up for SMS yet, but it's coming. 99% of the time texting will be unnecessary and a bigger pain in the ass to deal with, but it could save the life of someone unable to talk for whatever reason. That's why I'm not opposed to it.

They assume the level of public interest in this project will be high enough to get the word out. Most people are not community-oriented enough to look into it, and don't want to see or hear about the police unless they need them right now. If any department wants to get the word out about 311, they need to slap stickers on the backs of their cars and windows, just as they did to advertise 911 years ago.

Where I live, if you try calling the normal non-emergency number to reach the police for some mundane thing, they tell you to call 911 (even if you're clear that its not an emergency). Then the 911 dispatchers get upset at you because you're calling about something mundane. So either way, you lose.

I believe it, I've heard that before. Maybe when the widow of a heart attack victim sues the department because it took so long to get through, they'll change their policy. They obviously aren't asking the dispatchers for input.
