On the other side, Ingrid "Chris" Sims has had to endure smoke in her Stanley Terrace public housing apartment in Deerfield Beach for the past 16 years
"It's coming into my bathroom mostly. I have to close the vent and tape it up," Sims said. "My neighbor smokes really bad and even through the tape it comes through."

People burning their apartments down because of smoking should not be held responsible for the costs of insuring the apartments they live in because they smoke. The evil rich landlords should bear the burden of the costs.

jenlen: Bullshiat! The only problem there is between her ears. her sensitive nose

bathrooms whose vents are piped into a shared vent would allow the vapor and smoke to permeate other apartments. Blame the builder for not wanting to make individual vents for each apartment.

Another "boohoo I can't subject others to my addiction's putrid, chemical-laced externalities" smoker thread. Will these ever end?

/does no smoker understand that liberty is "your right to throw your fist ends where my nose begins"...

Of course it's your right to smoke in your own home. That's why you can pay to live in a farm house in the country. The land is cheap and the job opportunities are limited giving you all the free time in the world to smoke your life away.

Do you own the building? If so, you can so whatever you want. If you don't own the building, you need to abide by the rules set forth by the owner.

This isn't hard. If you want to smoke/have a cat/paint the walls purple in your apartment, find one that allows those things.

I believe the constitution might have something to say to this. Sorry Nanny Staters, smoking is every individuals choice and their home is just that, their home. Once the dipsh*ts who try to stop everybody from doing everything they don't like start stamping out camping fires everywhere they go, I won't begin to care about their "plight".

Yeah and no more electricity for you. I don't like all the carcinogens and nitrous emissions from the coal-fired power plants.

Oh and I don't like the cologne/perfume you wear. Banned, too.

In fact just stop eating, you might fart and I don't want to smell it.

There, all better now!

I don't have a huge problem if publicly-owned housing bans smoking in their properties. Makes sense that the gov't wouldn't want the hassle of having to deal with nicotine residue.

However, if a private landlord wants to allow smoking, it's no business of any level of government at all.

Speaking as someone who had lived in public housing, that's not absurd at all. Ever once in a while, I would get a good whiff of tobacco, and only God knew where it came from.

Of course, unlike "Chris," I didn't give a shiat.

Why would the spray paint and solvent thing be bad? We need some solvents in cleaners but hardly the wonderful bouquet we use now.

A quick note to Ernestine Gray, the woman in the article laboring under the notion that smoking is a *choice*. Sorry, it's not. It's an addiction.

And a very smelly one, at that. Still, I'd bet that a good number of smokers would set about giving it all up if only they had some idea of just how bad their habit makes them, and everything they own, smell.

Bought a house for just this reason. Lived in 3 apartments before buying. Got tired of A holes that smoke, cook stinky food everyday, and walk like an elephant on the floors (its mainly the skinny people that do that). Still there are issues, cause half of the people in the world are inconsiderate a holes, but at least it is not a every day thing now.

Umm, if your 'fellow citizens,' as you put it, have the government pass laws continually banning the available places for you to smoke, isn't that 'the government being a dick to you'?

I don't believe that the issue is specifically with smoking in apartments, but rather, that the quality of most apartments in the US is so bad, that odors can move from one unit to another.

I had friends who used to live next to a Korean family. Very nice people, but they ate a lot of pickled foods and the stench would make you gag. The smell would come through the apartment walls as if they were paper. Another friend lived next to a geriatric woman and you could smell this sick mixture of strong perfume and death through the walls. At least we joked that it wouldn't take many days to know if she had died in there.

Most apartments seem to be wood framing, OSB plywood, fiberglass insulation, vapor barriers on the exterior walls and cheap gypsum board. Common walls between the units, which most likely do not have vapor barriers. It sure as fark isn't enough to block sound or smell.

Best/worst example. I knew someone who bought a townhome...the 4 or 5 townhomes each had a basement with a sump pump...but the foundation was shared. The co-worker didn't find out about the shared foundation until he was wondering why his sump pump was always pumping. It turned out that the other tenants figured this out, and unplugged their own pumps to save on electricity, letting my coworker handle all of the "keep the basements dry" activities for the entire complex. IIRC, he asked his lawyer what would happen if he turned off sump pump, too, apparently if it became known that whatever flooding that would've occurred due that action, there's a good chance he would be come liable for it, since this was an accidental mistake, but an act out of teaching someone a lesson.

Im not really sure how it turned out in the end, but it is an interesting "tragedy of the commons" problem versus "a man's home is his castle".

Um...it's a choice. I choose to light up a cigarette when I want to. Nobody is going to tell me otherwise either. So what if it offends you. I could care less. I'm not going to stop smoking because it's going to make you happy.
