Yeah. I used to have a neighbor who believed everything that was printed in Weekly World News. I'd point out to her how patently false the stories were (there were pre-internet days) and her rebuttal was that they couldn't print it if it wasn't true. I'd come back at her with, "
so, you think all the books in the library's fiction section are true because they're in print?".

She'd get pissy & wouldn't talk to me for awhile after we had one of those arguments. I wouldn't have minded so much if she didn't constantly try to "share" the stories with me, even though I had told her countless times that was interested. And her being pissy at me was kind of a relief.

FTFA: "Social media and lightning quick communication can deliver news, but Bowen said it's not always clear from where the information is coming."

This.

The problem is that people pass the article along to others without saying that it came from The Onion. They post it in their Facebook, then someone else copies it to email and send it to some researcher. Then the world ends. Or something.

pudding7: I always assumed the institutions The Onion used in their articles were fake. It never occurred to me that (in this example) the CPI might be a real thing.

I have found that a surprising amount of people and institutions that are mentioned in the Onion are actually quite real. When they mention some politician or official in a story they usually actually exist. In general Onion articles show a depth of knowledge and an amount of research that must have gone into them that continue to amaze me. The sad thing is that the onion writers probably tend to have a firmer grasp on the subject they are parodying than real media outlets have on the stuff they are writing actual news about.

2011-10-30 12:53:22 PM
Nonetheless, CPI officials said they were inundated with phone calls and emails from people concerned that parenting really does not matter.

Do you get the feeling these people were almost hoping to get off the hook?

"Sorry ma'am. Turns out it was a joke. Parenting is actually very important."

"(sigh) You mean I have to go back out there? Can't you do something?"

Since that quote was mentioned in connection with them being swamped with phone calls, it's reasonable to assume that at first they didn't know the source that led to those "about that study of yours.." phone calls.

"For instance, we had a lady, she basically called and said she was writing a book or something and she really wanted a copy of the research and it supported some of her thoughts," Hilberman said.

"It's obviously not OK to list our agency, even in satire," she said.

...

"The falsified study quoted in The Onion states that all parenting styles lead to the same outcome - unhappy, miserable adults," the release reads. "We have been around a long time because we know that parent education does work."

This lady misses the point. Entirely.

Someone has never heard of Jerry Falwell reminiscing about his first time.

It's not a falsified study. It never existed in the first place. She is trying to defend her work against a parody. That's all she has to tell these people, instead of going off the rails about what The Onion did.

Streisand effect bonus for the Onion.

So, to sum up, the Onion's article basically says "Nobody's perfect"
People's response "How DARE you say I'm not perfect!"

Fail 1: The Onion is satire.
Fail 2: Nobody's perfect." Include everyone in that set.
Fail 3: CPI should have no ego to stroke in the matter, but they do.

2011-10-30 01:23:33 PM
Addendum to Fail 3: That's part of the Onion's expsing truth through satire too: benevolent non profits are usually much more concerned with money than the service they supposedly provide.

Since people have such a strong emotional and moral stake in this, and everyone is keen to vindicate their own theories, it is best to be empirical about "good parenting".

There aren't many adults whose upbringing I was able to observe closely. Of these few I can report:

1) The boys raised in households with passive or absent fathers and assertive mothers grew up to be effeminate homosexuals.

2) Where children were badly neglected the eldest child matured (emotionally) precociously and assumed the role of caregiver for the rest.

3) Children who were assigned adult work and held to adult standards matured quickly and seemed to skip adolescence altogether. Moreover, as young adults they showed more self-discipline and caused less trouble than those who were treated as children when they were adolescents.

4) Small children who were hated and tormented by their parents went basket-case crazy before they even grew up.

5) Older children who were hated and tormented by their parents matured quickly and developed a ruthless, nomadic mentality.

6) Children who were raised in very violent environments in which they were participants as much as victims grew up to be less interested in violence than other young adults, though incomparably more functional in the setting of actual violence. Similarly with children raised in very sexual environments.

7) Children raised by parents who placed prime importance on drugs, alcohol, or religion went on either to strongly embrace these things or strongly reject them, and sometimes both by turns.

8) I, personally, have seen no evidence that a deliberate effort to raise children according to any popular, academically approved method produces a good result. I have seen a few bad outcomes, though it's not clear how they correlate with the methods.
