It's really sad that we don't treat a woman in this situation with the compassion she desperately needs. Working until the last minute of her pregnancy so that she doesn't lose everything when our country is overflowing with food and land, how uncaring she must feel the country to be.

She is a symbol of the true problem with America. It isn't about banks getting bailouts or people losing their homes because they became overextended on credit. It's about people who live on the razor's edge of starvation, who even in the most desperate times have no recourse but to work themselves to death, literally in this lady's case.

Because she was a minimum wage earner with a baby on the way, you're going to get some idiots here who will respond that she was probably going to quit her job after the child's birth and go on welfare because she would have a "better" income.

Which may be true. And there's the problem.

At some point, people in her situation probably ask themselves why they are slaving at a $7.25 an hour job when they can be at home collecting and have something other than chicken thighs and Hamburger Helper -without the hamburger- for dinner. She could have been receiving benefits at this point but opted not to and instead, like you said, worked a night shift while heavily pregnant. While walked to and from work. This IS what's wrong with the country. Punish the people that are trying to make a life for themselves while rewarding those who chose to let the state and federal government feed and care for them.

I'm not really sure where you're trying to go with this. First off she did not work herself to death. She was killed by a car on her way home from work. Unfortunately, this happens everyday to people. There are also many woman who work right up until child birth. Pregnant woman for the most part are not disabled.
This is just a sad story of a pregnant woman being killed by a hit and run driver. Yet somehow you feel the need to try and politicize the situation. You are actually no better those that want to have a laugh at this woman's expense.

Thanks; I appreciate it. But it *is* a clever headline, I just would rather see it used on a celebrity--someone who invites it--than an innocent. But this is why I think Fark is superior to reddit. I can run off into my own little corner and talk to myself, or I can come to a broad forum and post and wait for the well-thought posts that challenge me. And I'm with the "Welcome to Fark". I can troll and snark with the best of them. We have two options in modern debate: to hug and cuddle with only those we agree with or to shriek and bait those we disagree with. I think fark lies in the middle ground, so I keep coming back. Anyway: thanks.

Maybe, or we're just going to ask why a minimum wage earner was about to have a child out of wedlock.

A child who would become an immediate burden on society, probably (through crime and handouts) for its entire life.

But hey, the government's got plenty of money.

If she had decent benefits she most likely would not have been working right up until her due date. The only women I've known who do that are women who can't afford to take the time off.

Unfortunately she lives in a country where the government doesn't provide this benefit (could you imagine the teeth-gnashing?) and worked at a shiatty McJob where either she a) didn't make enough to afford such benefits or b) was worked to just under part-time hours so she wouldn't qualify for them anyway.

If she hadn't been a pedestrian when she was hit by a car, she'd have had a much better chance of surviving. But since we don't know whether she wasn't driving as a result of the economy or as a result of her own actions, all I can say is it's just a sad situation overall. That kid would likely have been much better off being raised by someone who's poor but has that kind of work ethic.

There is a simpler solution to her plight. Marry the baby daddy and have him take care of her. I know it sounds like a novel concept but it worked for generations. A couple would get married, then have the baby. The woman may or may not have been pregnant at the time of marriage (the old joke was that the first baby could come at any time. After that they take 9 months). The father stepped up and took responsibility. If they got married before the woman was pregnant, they had a chance to save up for children. If not, they worked extra hard to take care of the situation themselves, no one looked to the government or society to bail them out from their responsibility in creating a life. Society assumed that if a couple wanted to presume the right to fark around, they should also assume the responsibility for any consequences.

Statistically, children living in single parent families are far more likely to live below the poverty level. Children living in single parent homes are far more likely to get in trouble with the law, more likely to drop out of school, more likely to get involved with drugs and alcohol, more likely to have children out of wedlock themselves. In short, more likely to be a burden to society in a host of ways.

Women celebrate their reproductive choice - free or low-cost access to birth control and abortion rights. This woman was apparently single and working a near-minimum wage job. She appears (and we don't know this for certain from the article) to have been condemning her child to a life of poverty because of her life choices. While this accident is certainly a tragedy, it doesn't point out any lack of compassion on the part of our society as much as it points out a series of unfortunate decisions on the part of the young woman.

You've red herring the issue from one of the ability to sustain oneself on minimum wage to one where only married women of means should carry a pregnancy to term.

But, hey, at least you're pro-choice.

Are you trying to make a point? How is suggesting that the father of the child take responsibility a new low? How is suggesting that the mother exercise her reproductive freedom in a manner that is more responsible toward the child a new low?

Your irrational snark demonstrates hitherto untold levels of ignorance and unplumbed depths of irresponsibility. The magical man on lollipop lane is the one who thinks that supposed adults can continue to behave irresponsibly and irrationally while demanding that society take care of them.
