LASSIE

Friends, Rotweilers, countrymen, lend me your chewy pig ears;
I come to bury Lumpy Polyester Man, not to praise him.
The evil that men do lives after them;
The good is oft interred with their bones;
So let it be with Lumpy Polyester Man. The noble Rin Tin Tin
Hath told you Lumpy Polyester Man was ambitious:
If it were so, it was a grievous fault,
And grievously hath Lumpy Polyester Man answer'd it.

I'm surprised the dig actually got far enough as to bite the cop. Usually these heroic policemen are able to identify dogs being threatening and shout them in the face way before it would escalate to actually being bitten.

Bloodhounds and the like, yes. Other dogs work off a combination of sight, smell and sound.
But don't police dogs live with their officers?

According to TV they do.
Somethings not right here.
Cop probably beats it when they get home.

I agree there's something wrong here. It's takes some doing to get a dog to turn on its handler. (depending on the breed)

It doesn't actually say the cop that got bitten was the dog handler, sounds like it was a different officer. Chances of a trained K9 turning on the handler are very slim.

It doesn't say the officer bitten was the handler, so it was probably just another officer who was involved in the chase. Officer lets dog off leash, tells it "get those guys" waving generally in the direction of the chase, and some other officer giving chase gets bitten. Should just be lucky it wasn't some poor sap walking through the fog on that day.

/Police dogs should not be used aggressively in my mind. Tracking, or sniffing yes, but they can still fark someone's arm up, weather it's the right person or not, if they've been trained to attack. It's like that guy we had a story on maybe 6 months ago, where a police dog farked up a guys shoulder when they entered the wrong house, and they arrested him for "assaulting an officer", because he tried to stop the dog ripping into him. Even with the rampant abuse of tazers, it's much better than sicking dogs onto people.

I agree. Dogs run on loyalty (well, pack membership, anyway). This dog was not properly trained and/or treated.

Wrong. There are some sighthounds, but all dogs have bad eyesight and incredible sense of smell, orders of magnitude above humans. The fog might even have intensified the scent. That dog knew exactly who he was biting. I agree it was a training failure. Dog had been trained too much to bite a trainer with a covered arm, and not enough to track creeps stinking of adrenaline, fear and potato chips, or whatever else they were stealing in the snack bar. Snausages.

I know that half of a dog's brain is used for scent processing. The other senses, depends on the breed. My spaniels, with those heavy ears, can't echolocate worth a darn. Visually, they can follow movement and anticipate the target.

For me, this was funny. I had a dog years ago that was racist. His owner was abusive, and when I found him I took him away from the owner.

This dog "Elka" was a doberman un-ear defamed unlike the majority. She was a beautiful dog with a lot of love to give and very trainable. In fact, she would walk next to my knee in a "heel" formation, and would sit when we got to a corner.

She however was racist. Her original owner was black, so I can only surmise that her feelings was learned by beatings. She hated everyone black.

She was a great pet however. I loved her more than I loved most humans. And when I left for the military, I missed her tons. After I left, she dug a pair of jeans out of my old laundry to sleep on. That's how loyal she was as a pet. Unfortunately, for any current pets, that is how I judge them. I wish I had her now as a puppy.

Define "visually". You mean they watch your hands or a ball or where the shot bird falls? They can smell your hands, the ball and the shot bird, from yards away. They can smell the trail of molecules the hand, ball or bird leaves in the air as it moves.

Of course they can also see, poorly, but to suggest that even a sighthound would get confused in fog because they couldn't see, and bite someone they could obviously smell, is stupid. Even a sighthound is tracking scent molecules in the air, too. Even if any dog were completely blind, they could still identify their owner and the person who had been riding in the squad car with their owner, from yards away, let alone from close enough to bite.

This is a training failure. The dog did not know who he was supposed to track and bite. The thieves probably smelled like the kids the dog had been trained to let pet him on community demonstration days.

All well and good, but doesn't explain how my dogs can play catch or respond to hand signals.

simplicimus: All well and good, but doesn't explain how my dogs can play catch or respond to hand signals.

Your dogs can see, poorly. If you used treats to train them, they will watch your hands intently, ever hopeful that one day, the treat will reappear. The fact that they can see does not mean that they cannot smell in low light conditions. To think so, is a stupid fallacy of logic, or an ignorance of the fact that a dog's world is a world of scents rather than a human's world of sight.

It's about as stupid as suggesting that if you put a clothespin on a driver's nose, he would have to crash into a tree, because he couldn't smell the tree. He could still see it.
