Stop writing?

2011-10-29 05:35:56 PM
FTA: " Although the author did not originally plan to kill off any of the characters in the series of books - and subsequent films - she was tempted to change her mind after finding herself in an 'unhappy place'."

So she was able to find an "unhappy place" atop that mountain of cash? Huh.

GreenAdder: Stop writing?

I'm not a fan. I don't care if she writes anymore, as long as her fans don't pester me to read her work.

She just strikes me as kind of...obsessed with her own work. Like one of those Twilight fans who kisses the Edward Cullen cardboard cutout she stole from the FYE. Except she wrote it.

Absolutely hated Ron in the first two books/movies. The character developed, at least.

Six_By_Nine: She just strikes me as kind of...obsessed with her own work.

She's like this generation's Anne Rice.

Rice is just entirely too defensive about her works - she takes even the mildest and most polite criticism as a direct attack on her person. Remember that tl;dr she put on Amazon when one of her books was getting so-so reviews?

Yeah. That's Rowling in 5 years.

You mean she isn't now?

I remember when Book 7 was originally released, I read an interview with her that was prefaced with a short couple of sentences that said if you haven't read the book, please don't read this article. At the request of Rowling herself.

This is a woman entirely up her own ass.

Harry should have at least gotten a hand job from Ginny in the last book. He's going off on a secret mission to save the world and all he gets is one kiss on his birthday! They are in high school for christ sakes and he was going off to war. Harry should have bruised some of that milky white skin and left her wanting more!

I wonder if any interviewer has had the balls to ask her how she could rip off Susan Cooper's The Dark Is Rising series of books so blatantly? Seriously, lots of people talk about her debt to JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis, but the Harry Potter books are basically a rewriting of Cooper's books.

/The Dark Is Rising never became bloated, and came with a satisfying ending to boot. Too bad Rowling didn't steal that bit from the booka.

I skimmed the wikipedia entry for The Dark Is Rising, and it seems like it also rehashed some standard fantasy tropes and mixed in existing mythology, so if there are any similarities, it seems like it is because they both follow a traditional Hero's Journey plot structure. Hell, Cooper even had a sword that gives off blue flames when evil is near, which seems like Sting with the serial numbers filed off and a little Excalibur mixed in. Not to mention Things of Power is kind of a crappy name for a set of plot McGuffins compared to Horcurx.
