There's the Steelers' first round pick next year.

I love how the announcers kept talking about him jumping up and down on the field and pounding his chest but never showed it. I would like to see that, just to get even more mad at that idiot.

Was he signaling for fair catch or shielding his eyes from the sun? Did I miss something?

Arkansas guy should never play again.

I saw no fair catch signal in the replays. Though the ball didn't get there before the hit and the Arkansas guy will probably get kicked off the team since he is on special teams and not one of their stars.

That was my thought too. Obviously the NCAA is gonna take the receiver's side in this one, but if that wasn't so flagrantly dirty and there was no injury that would be a weak 15 yarder to call.

That was vicious.

Good to see #17 from Vanderbilt up on his feet after that...

Hands-down the worst cheap shot I've ever seen in a football game, right there.

yeah, i saw the Razorback doing that "hop run" kind of thing back to his sideline, but i didn't see anything i could call "taunting".

Land Ark: I saw no fair catch signal in the replays.

yeah.....i'm certainly not saying it was, OMG NO PENALTY WHATSOEVER, but as i understand the college rule, the returner has to unambiguously indicate fair catch; waving the shiat out of his hand. here, the guy holds his arm in the air, but i thinkt he argument could be made the guy was shielding his eyes.

hard to say.

maybe i'm missing something. on the clip i just didn't see anything that struck me as "the returner is calling fair catch". it looked more like the returner was sheiling his eyes. he is facing the sun after all. look at the shadows on the field.

go to 1:18. his hand is in the air but he's just holding it there. again, i don't know the college rule well enough, but i think you have to clearly indicate what you're doing.

i don't see it. brutal as shiat but minus the returner waving his hand off, i can't say it is as bad as it looks.

Talk about missing the point. Whether or not he called fair catch, it is a flagrant, dirty hit. He led with his helmet on a player prior to the ball either contacting the receiver or the ground: personal foul all the way. Being proud of it is just dickish.

/I don't think it was a fair catch.

Shotgun Justice: and if its the best option: why is ie crashing?

Maybe it's one of his plug ins or a random add on. Or about an endless possibility of other reasons? Maybe it's his memory and it would crash other browsers too. Who said it was the best option in the first place smart guy?

Sorry, calling it his best option was presumptuous. Perhaps primary or preferred choice would have been better. A memory fault would have to be very specific to target Gawker related sites. Probably just a browser specific handling of embedding that Gawker uses doesn't play nice with ie. It happens. You don't have to white knight for Microsoft.

I like how Wade acts completely offended at the call.

You're so picked on, Wade. You poor, poor thing. It's okay, I'm sure mamma will kiss it all better and you can tell all your friends how it was a bullshiat call and you were just playing by the rules, which the refs OBVIOUSLY don't know anything about.

You're the only one who is playing a clean game out there, they're just a bunch of haters trying to keep you down.

Assclown.

I'm baffled by the question over the fair catch call.. in the first moments of the clip, you can see the guy waving his hand in the air, pretty unambiguous fair catch call, and the announcer saw that as well. Very routine, very obvious.

/Seen plenty of fair catch calls "live" at the Big House
//Not rocket science, seeing a hand waving in the air

At almost 6 feet and almost 200 lbs, Mr. Wade is going to get a physics lesson every time he steps back on the field.

If he ever steps back on the field.

^This, it was obvious to me on the initial "live" play as well; he waved for it almost immediately, probably because he knew he was going to have to block the sun out of his face. Most of the replays come back in after the fair catch wave.
Even if he hadn't waved fair catch, it wouldn't matter, because you can't be within something like 2 yards until the returner touches it or it hits the ground.

And for those who didn't see the taunt, you can see him strutting around after the hit in the replay around 2:05-2:15.
He's lucky he didn't get called for both the personal foul and unsportsmanlike conduct for the taunting. His coach helped get him off the field mostly so he wouldn't draw another unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the way out.

/if I were a coach, I would have ejected him myself for that hit.

2011-10-29 07:50:37 PM
I rewatched the video and I don't think it was a fair catch. The player's hand has to distinctly raise above the level of their head in a waving motion. In moving toward the ball's landing area, he has one hand blocking the glare (not moving) while the other is extended about waist high waving (I think he is keeping balance. A lot of people do this when running with their eyes up). About a step before where the ball would land his extended hand raises about helmet level. This motion appears to be a last second adjustment to his path to the ball and not a definite fair catch wave.

That's not even close to the dirtiest hit I've ever seen. Jack Tatum would have called that a love tap. For a more recent example, don't forget about Albert Haynesworth's head stomp on a grounded player, after the play was completely dead, from a few years ago.

MugzyBrown: Umm you can't hit the return man before the ball gets there no matter if he signals for a fair catch or not.

Yea, that's what I was gonna post.

I think he did call for the fair catch, but it doesn't matter. He never had a chance to catch the ball before getting laid out.

I saw the hoping but didn't see any chest thumping cause they kept cutting away. Still it was clear he needed to ejected, specially when he was still talking shiat going into the lock room and not even the least bit remorseful that he may have seriously hurt someone or even hurt his team in the game they were losing.

That hit was incredibly dirty. Violent and mal-intentioned. He could have seriously injured himself and the other player.

But...

How about trying to teach the kid a lesson and try to calm his hotdoggin' ass down? Keep him off the field as long as you want, but to just drop him with no support would be foolish IMO. What if he really does have a violent streak in him? Wouldn't some guidance and intervention be a good idea?

The desire to want to drop these kids like they're nothing and wait for them to fail just... I can't agree there.

I'd be with you if this kid was in high school. But this is an adult we're talking about who I'm sure has put himself in many situations just like this and has justified (or had it justified to him) every single instance. There are thousands of kids at Arkansas studying hard and thanking God every day they wake up that they have the privilage of a higher education. They spend more money than they have to so they can subsidize this moron's education with the hope that they might get some entertainment and school pride and instead this jackass makes them ashamed to cheer for the team. Meanwhile he gets every single rule bent and broken for him so he can be on the road for 3 days of the week and miss tests and assignments that would fail anyone else.

Screw him. He wants back on the team, you drop him for the rest of the season and drop his scholarship. Tell him he can try out again next summer if he's still enrolled.

Whether or not this guy gets suspended (probably not, it IS the SEC), I hope he never plays a down of professional football. He is clearly no more mature than high schoolers, and doesn't deserve to be paid for his athletic talents.

/I bet he wears #1 because he thinks he's the #1 badass in the SEC

moparedtn: Hands-down the worst cheap shot I've ever seen in a football game, right there.

Check out the Boise State shot on Masoli a few years ago. He passes it from out of the pocket with no one around him, a second elapses, another second elapses, Boise State player goes helmet-to-helmet (it wasn't an INT or anything, so he wasn't even "blocking".

Rising_Zan_Samurai_Gunman: Even if he hadn't waved fair catch, it wouldn't matter, because you can't be within something like 2 yards until the returner touches it or it hits the ground.

Giving the most credit to the Arkansas guy possible, the returner waved for it, set up, then started running again, as the ball wasn't landing anywhere near where he waved. So there's the potential that he wasn't where he expected him to be. Still no excuse for helmet-to-helmet.

2011-10-29 09:09:42 PM
The head down and helmet to helmet impact is definitely the sign of dirty play.

Wade is lucky the Vanderbilt coach had such good control over his players. You can see the coach go running out, grab some players and point back at his own sideline. Basically saying "Get back over there". On a team with a less alert coach, Wade was headed for some insta karma. #60 on Vandy looks pissed (note the coach grabbing his facemask to control him) and quite capable of beating the shiat out of Wade.

I mean... I get it - but I guess to me it seems more of a systemic failing than simply an individual one. Punishing individuals feels very good and tangible, but I'm not sure how much it helps.
