FTFA: Experts had said that there was just a 1-in-2,000 chance that any piece of ROSAT would strike anybody anywhere on Earth.

That's it? 1 in 2,000? How can that possibly be right? Given that most of the Earth's surface is water and/or uninhabited, how can the odds not be 1 in 70 million or something? Little help here?

Well, start with the surface being 70% (or so) water covered, that's about 1 in 3.5. Then factor in the amount of land that is uninhabitable and/or not achievable from the satellite's known orbit. Factor in mountain shadows and potential for breakup into multiple pieces, and I'd say 1 in 2000 is pretty good. Remember, this isn't "chance that it will hit you, personally" but rather "chance a single piece will hit a human being somewhere on the planet."
