Europe: Yo, we need some help here Germany
Germany: Hey, we're keeping it real over here, staying afloat. Go ask someone else.
Greece: Will work for food
Europe: Cmon Germany, this is getting kinda bad.
Germany: We're totes out of money to hand out, sorry.
Accountant: Uh, actually...
Europe: So, Germany... have you lost some weight recently...

Actually it is about a quarter of what Germany paid into the European bailout fond. It's not peanuts. In fact one might say that 55 billion Euro might almost count as real money.

I especially like that apparently the accounting mistake was neglecting to subtract what they owe you from what you owe them when calculating how much was owed. This sounds like complicated math indeed.

With the money the US re-found this week and now this, I really ought to check the pockets of my pants hanging in my closet to see if I forgot about a couple billion.

This reminds me of the time I found $20, a few all zone transit passes, and a pack of cigarettes in a jacket I rarely wear.

Something similar happened to my parents recently. My father is retired Air Force and he has always left the finances to my mother. She formed a habit of squirreling away paper money change from small purchases into a hidden envelope. She found it recently in the summer and it was some several thousand dollars. Not really the same scope, but you know it's not every day that your Dick and Janes boost a few thousand bucks out of thin air.

/related: i was born in west germany when there was such a place

Sweet. Greece will be very happy that Germany found this extra money to bail them out with.

Let me introduce myself. My name is Gunter Getcha, and I am the Chief Accountant for FMS Wertmanagement, a nationalized German commercial bank. I recently discovered an accounting error in the amount of 55 Billion Euros. A mutual friend gave me this discussion board as an excellent means to contact a person who might be able to help me transfer this money to an American account. For your part in expediting the transfer, you would be given 20% of the transfer amount, equal to 11 Billion Euros. Of course, due to the nature of this transfer, your complete confidentiality is requested. If you are interested in assisting me, please respond to this post with your contact email. Of course, BIE is always appreciated.

I have a friend who's mother died this past winter. They were helping his dad get the house cleaned up, get rid of all her clothes, etc, and found like $3500 worth of change they had been keeping in a huge dresser drawer.

I found a fiver in my jeans, once, so this is normal and happens all the time. Nothing to see here.
