Fortunately your mom is the foremost expert in the field.

What bug genitalia might look like. That yellow stuff? Fly semen.

Sadly I did not receive a government grant.

Well .. in terms of species barriers the cock is pretty damn important.

Once we understand bug genitalia, we can produce pesticides that cause bug offspring to lack the functional components of said genitalia. Then they give birth to sterile bugs. Sterile bugs = less bugs.

Less bugs = cheaper produce.

I know a guy who's doing his PhD thesis on fruit fly mating behavior. It's more interesting than it sounds*, but he gets nothing but "you watch fly porn all day?" jokes.

*He's trying to decode which neural pathways are used for which parts of the mating behavior, which is a first step toward understanding our own innate neural mechanics.

And why is that, if you don't mind my asking?

Your concept of a possible outcome from this research sounds like it has the potential for horrific environmental impacts. 0_0

duckpoopy: Oh noes! Science is winning! Better cut their funding so religion can keep people in the dark and controlled.

Science is truly worse than ACORN.

2011-10-29 05:51:43 PM
Ya know, there's the science that they taught you in high school, and then there's real science.

There's the great theoretical stuff like F=MA, F=G(M1+M2)/d^2 or even E=Mc^2 and if you're clever enough to notice the pattern, the stuff you learned was the theoretical stuff.

So let me ask you... Did Newton or Einstein wake up one freakin' morning and just come up with these this shiat out of a vacuum?

No, they did not. They figured out a pattern developed from a farkton of anonymous people collecting data. In other words, grad students doing grunt work, patiently, and over long periods of time.

/ not a grad student, but I empathize.

2011-10-29 05:53:42 PM
Well, ok... Dirac did in fact create his ideas from a vacuum, but he's a degenerate case.

Silly in what way? I would imagining eating is something that most people consider important, and reproduction of insects is fairly critical in lots of ways (both positive, such as bees and other pollinators, and negative, such as pests).

You know, it's bad enough that we have to deal with Big Oil, Big Labor and Big Pharma. Now we have to deal with Big Genetalia?

This is getting out of hand!

/what?

Most people hear about studying fruit flies and think it's silly(like Palin), but don't realize there are several very good reasons why fruit flies are picked for lab work. Ultimately it's research to figure out how humans work.

Those of us who have spent years in a nonhuman primate neurophysiology lab would point out many many problems with that :P
