Syfylis is involved?

It'll be low budget, poorly promoted, put on a bad night, have its season split in half with a minimum 6 month break between halves, unceremoniously cancelled, and then they'll throw up their hands and wonder how this could have happened.

Book it, done.

Did you guys even read the first sentence of the article?

Syfy's newly formed joint venture with Universal Pictures, Syfy Films-which, thankfully in this case, is not to be confused with actual Syfy films-has just acquired George R.R. Martin's Wild Cards as its first project.

It doesn't sound like they are making some crappy "TV movie" ...

Wonder who they'll cast to play Fortunato, the Ace of Pimps.

It'd be interesting if they centered it around the Sleeper. They wouldn't need to cast the same lead for more than a few weeks.

I'd have added, "with visual FX by an intern with a Macbook and a consumer priced copy of Aftereffects". Maybe Maya, if they kicked in the bucks.

In what universe exactly is that even a watchable show unless you are just wanting to see geeky/hawt chicks and bad steampunk?

Perhaps you a wrestling fan too?

Syfy is a poison to real science fiction and fantasy.

Don't get your hopes up.

The last wild cards in a sci fi series were dealt a bad hand by Fox.

Casting all of Cap'n Trips' "Friends" should be fun. Not to mention the line up for the Aces High "Prove you're an Ace and get in free" annual Wild Card Day brouhaha.

/Carnifex for the win.

That wasn't a very good series iirc, started out strong but then just meandered around with a bunch of vignettes and pointless characters in service to nothing but the author's penchant for describing sadistic acts. Oh, wait... which Martin series are we talking about again?

Yeah, their mini-series and things, while not all great, have at least been well done. Its not The Asylum making it.

Also, this series would never work on a regular cable or TV. The big draw in that series was the over the top sex and violence. It would work on HBO or Showtime though.

If it's based on the Wild Card series, it's going to suck. After the first two it was like reading someones pen and paper RPG night, only with super heroes.

And I remember parts of it being pretty dark and disturbing as well. I wonder how SyFy would pull this off. (Poorly I'm guessing)

Syfy?

Even if the series is good, 100 percent they will end it so badly you'll hate it forever. Syfy can NOT end a series well to save their damn lives.

2011-10-29 03:05:33 PM
Martin is the editor of the Wild Cards series. He only wrote/created a few choice characters but these are "mosaic" novels.

Given SyFy's track record I'm sure Crenson will wake to find it was a bad dream.

Was hoping it was Fevre Dream...that would make a great movie. You'd think the combination of vampires and GRRM would be too much to pass up.

Oh well.

BalugaJoe: He didn't write those books. He was just the editor.

Are they all collections? I've only read the first book as it was available for download online. Never seen any of the other books anywhere so haven't been able to continue it. But in the first book GRRM only wrote The Sleeper and Turtle stories I think (which were the only good ones imo)

2011-10-29 05:16:33 PM
I already know how this series is going to end.

When the Aces and the Jokers finally come to terms with how they are hated by the rest of humanity they are going to take all of their technology and fly it into the sun while allowing their mortal enemies to fly off with all of their technology and then not write any of it down to warn future generations of Aces and Jokers so that the cycle starts again.

2011-10-29 05:40:59 PM
How the hell did they straighten out the rights for that? I mean, isn't the Zelazny estate mixed up in that? Aren't there fifteen different character creators and thus people with interest?

That must be a nightmare.

This thread might be dead, but I have to say, "OH HELL NAW!"

Wild Cards blows. I realize this is just my opinion, man, but I've tried the stuff several times. To me it reads like some Marty Stu dreck that Martin and his sci-fi writer buddies are churning out to meet contractual obligations. Bad pacing, bad characters, bad plots, bad universe. It's really quite astounding that Martin writes both The Song of Ice and Fire and this crap. I'm all for giving authors some slack, but every minute Martin spends writing Wild Cards is less time he has to finish SoI&F. And that's just not acceptable.

FiendishFellow05: Aw, man. I was hoping for a Tuf Voyaging mini-series, or something along those line...

Now this I could get behind.

IIRC, the Thieves' World mess taught the industry how to write the contracts for mosaic novels before Wild Cards started. Probably pretty straightforward, if all the authors signed the right things before word one was accepted into the project.

I would enjoy having an argument over who played the best Croyd Crenson in another decade or so - don't screw this series up, Syfy.
