It is unknown at this stage why a plumber was working in the roof of the unit block.

Why is this here? Is someone out there wondering "OMG there aren't any pipes in any attics anywhere ever! Sounds suspicious! Just what was that plumber up to anyway, hmmm?"

I HATE it when squirrels die in my plumber.

2011-10-29 01:01:36 PM
Something mammalian managed to crawl into a space between the outside bricks and the inside wall in my bedroom one winter. It died. The aroma at first was fleeting, then it was constant. I had to close off the room pretty much all summer and fall waiting for the smell to dissipate. Left the two windows open and a fan on, too.
That was like five years ago, I guess; every once in a while I can still catch a whiff.

It's gonna be interesting when / if I ever sell this house.

There's a very important pipe that runs up and out through the roof, called a sewer vent pipe. It's what ensures you aren't strangled in your sleep by shiatgas from the sewers.

Also, Plumbers are frequently HVAC installers, meaning they have to mess with wiring and ductwork, etc....

I think it was those solar panels on the roof that killed him. Rooftop Solar is a bigger killer than Nuclear Power.

There is absolutely nothing more important. I'm not even gonna read the article until it's fixed! I may have to change the stick that's up my ass, though, it's been there for awhile. I hope it doesn't get changed while I am inserting a new one. Although I am sure something inconsequential to complain about will surface soon enough. I had similar this summer. The corpse appears to be a little down the wall, in the back bedroom. The only way to get to it is major destruction/rebuild.

CSB tiem...

Back when I was building houses we hired a contractor to come out and install the lines around a house we had just framed up. My boss at the time knew the company and had done a lot of business with them over the years. They sent out one of their new hires, a man with many years experience and well into his 40s. Big as a house, we figgered he had such a huge gut on him that he probably hadn't seen his own dick since he was a kid. He and his helper seemed to really know their shiat though, took measurements one day, spent another on cutting pipe, drilling holes and setting up. The day they were to do most of the installation, we took that off and went out shooting up in the hills.

Boss calls me the next monday, telling me get to the worksite as soon as I could and wait for him. I get there, there is a hole cut with a chainsaw through the living room floor that cut through about 10 joists and a 4x12 perilam beam that supported a wall along the entrance way and extended across the whole underfloor from the entrance to the kitchen.

Turns out, the plumber dude was so fat, that he had crawled under the floor to install the iron sewer line from the kitchen and a nearby bathroom, and had gotten so stuck the helper kid called the fire department to extract his fat ass and they'd cut a hole through to let him out.

Boss had insurance, and the contractor had insurance, but it set us back about 2 weeks on finishing the place and cost about $30 thou to fix. We never did see those guys again. It is still a source of much hilarity when I see my old boss sometimes.

/CSB off

I need to quit hanging out on Fark. First thing I thought of was that plumber's work in bathrooms/showers. He was just running the video camera wire through the attic

True. Or, he was working on their HVAC system...lots of plumbing companies do that as well. Lots of electricity involved with it, and when they are trying to do too many different kinds of business in one kind of business, they end up hiring guys who say they know what they are doing and they really don't, then they wind up usually screwing up wiring or the system--something like this would be worst case scenario. I've had one of my installers (who was pretty green) get badly shocked by 110. We had to lay him off not long afterwards, he was a danger to himself, and we had too many callbacks on him.

Seige101: FTFA "fatally electrocuted" as opposed to being non fatally electrocuted?

CSB: The term "electrocution" was coined by Thomas Edison as part of his campaign to discredit AC current when he built the electric chair. Prior to that he demonstrated thge "electrocution" of elephants.

(Edison was selling DC power distribution which wouldn't scale. When you have an inferior product use PR and lobbying.)

Aphoticamy: I've had one of my installers (who was pretty green) get badly shocked by 110. We had to lay him off not long afterwards, he was a danger to himself, and we had too many callbacks on him.

So is it safe to assume that Aussies use 220 like Europe? I wouldn't expect 110 to finish you off if you just bumped into a line. Of course I suppose central air units might use 220 or maybe he was also holding on to a well grounded pipe at the same time.

2011-10-29 06:29:44 PM
Our American 110 system is a anachronism caused by being first. Watts are watts though there are small efficiency gains with higher voltage. Mostly, you can use smaller conductors to save copper. Electricity affects different people differently, making it a poor execution method. It more cooks your brain than stops your heart. I've been bit by 240V and it hurts. Your arm feels broken for a while. But it can and has, been fatal.
