He couldn't politely point out that a mistake had been made? Seems like much ado about nothing.

The fact that they are complaining about it makes them sound cheap and fat.

2011-10-28 06:33:26 PM
What were they planning on tipping to begin with? 20% is the standard for a party of any size.

2011-10-28 06:37:28 PM
A party of 7 people, all wanting separate checks, should count themselves lucky that they were only charged 18%.

If you don't like tipping, eat at home.

30 bucks for 7 people is "lavish"? What a tool.

I guess this is the clientele Dave & Buster's attracts. Must be a wonderful place to dine.

I've had some OK food at the local Dave & Buster's. Any waiter or waitress will tell you that a-holes happen, no matter where you work.

2011-10-28 07:05:00 PM
I'm not sure what the recourse should be, but I know that the waitress made $30+ and was not entitled to such a lavish tip for the mediocre service she provided.

7 people. 7 checks. and she ended up with $30. What were you PLANNING on tipping her, you cheap farks?

Seriously, that works out to about $4.26 per person in tip.

If you're complaining about a tip that size, you should probably have borrowed more money off your mom to go out to dinner, because you obviously aren't earning any for yourself.

20% is standard for me because it's easier to do the math in my head then trying to figure out what 12% of the bill is.

The waitress got $30 for ONE table. ONE table that took AT THE MOST, two hours to complete. Even if that was her only table during those two hours, add the $2-$3 an hour she gets from D & B, and she was making mailman money.

MAILMAN MONEY!

The food's pretty mediocre, but they have deals where you can get a card to go play in the arcade afterward.

So there's that.

I assume this is a troll.

Anyway, without getting too much into the shiatfest that this thread is already becoming, I just want to throw out there that it's possible the waitress put that on there hoping they wouldn't notice, which could have resulted in a double tip.

I don't think that's common, but it happens.

Suburban Idiot
It's like in that "poem" about the footprints that so many people inexplicably hang on their walls. When the guy asks where Jesus was during those times when there was only one set of footprints in the sand, He replies that He was the eighth dinner guest at Dave & Buster's during those times.

Okay, that was worth it. Thanks for the tip!

Mandatory amounts added to bills due to party size are not "tips" they're "service charges".

Generally if they auto-add a gratuity I just pay that and leave it be.

Generally if they leave me to decide they'll wind up north of 20%, and north of 25 if they're really good.

And now that you've made it sound good, I'm going to obsess until I have some.

Fortunately there's a purveyor of fine wines and spirits less than a quarter mile from here. And it's early enough that I can actually get there before closing.

If it is as good as you just made it sound I will be in your debt, sir.

Guy: I don't know, five bucks a night.

Jerry: No, a dollar, two tops.

Guy: Hey, you guys aren't cuffed. What are you, narks?

George: Narks?

Jerry: Imagine, us narks?

George: No no no, you know actually we are friends of a serial killer.

Guy: Really? Well, that's very nice.

George: Oh, thank you.

Jerry: Suspected serial killer, he didn't actually do it.

George: Yeah well, we don't think.

Jerry: We're pretty sure.

Guy: A dollar a night?

Jerry: Yeah, that's a good tip!

Guy: That stinks!

Jerry: I read it in Ann Landers.

Guy: Oh, Ann Landers sucks!

My problem lies ONLY in that it was put on the bill directly. Yeah, "Steve" is a cheap douche, and might have tipped more than 18% anyway... But it shouldn't have been automatically added. Speak to the manager, just as a "the waitress did this", not to get your money back or some shiat like that.

/on and off server for 10 years...

2011-10-28 08:45:52 PM
I think it's a mistake for the restaurant to mandate a tip for a part of any size. And this is why...

Anyone who is covering the check for 8 people will certainly tip just fine. When the place mandates an 18% tip, there really is no room for the patron to go for, say, 20%. It's stupid. It's short sighted on the side of of the restaurant. In the end, it ends up ripping off the servers.

Or, in this case, some dude actually wrote a story about how he got shafted.
And, for the rest of my opinion, "STFU you Fn tool." You should have tipped that much anyway.

2011-10-28 08:45:58 PM
I tip 20 bucks after sitting at the bar for a few hours drinking bottled beer and having something to eat. If you can't afford to tip well, sit the fark home.

2011-10-28 08:46:04 PM
16.666(&c)% baseline default; easy math.

10% for really bad service. The only time there's no tip is when things were so screwed up I called the manager over to make the restaurant eat the bill -- and even then, if it's clearly the kitchen's fault (unlit charcoal puck in my BBQ... wat?), I've still (slightly) tipped the waitress.

Up to 50% if it's a waitress who's young, cute, hard-working, and clearly having a bad day.

(Yes, it's sexist; tough luck, waiters.)

2011-10-28 08:46:31 PM
FTA: "So, I was a little surprised when I got the check for my wife and I and found the 18% added in. I checked with the others at the table and they too had this added in. "

They had a party of 7 people and they asked for separate checks? What a douche. They should have added on 25%, just for the hassle of having to manage a bunch of tabs rather than just 1.

2011-10-28 08:46:54 PM
The party of seven sounds like they were all a bunch of cheap jerks. Anyone who has ever worked in food service knows what cheap jerks get :)

2011-10-28 08:49:41 PM
Gee, they type of people who would split a bill 7 ways would recieve mediocre service, i wonder why... If a tip is under $5, unless its delievery, or im throwing my change in the jar at the coffee shop, i round up to the nearest 5. Cheap bastards...

2011-10-28 08:49:50 PM
15% if you're average, 20% if you're good, or nothing if you suck. Plus, if you "forget" to charge me for something, I'll add that into the tip.

Also, this guy is a cheap bastard. I hold myself and my party to the rule-of-thumb stated above. Be it 2 people, or 22 people.

2011-10-28 08:49:54 PM
The fact they asked for separate checks sucked.

Normally when in a group, we just pool cash fro someone's single credit card pay. And if the service was great, then 20% is applied.

If the service sucked, then the tip tip will be less depending on the lapses.

The butt-heads posting about "should have paid 20% plus" are either servers that need a new career, or are out of touch with reality.

When did the normal tip go past 15% for decent service, and since when should anyone "diserve" it?

Mediocre service deserves a mediocre tip (or none).

If god wanted you to have a good tip by default, he would have had your restaurant and it to your wage.

And for those of you that feel indignant. My first W-2s were from a temp hiring company, and my second was from Waffle House. I busted ass for tips. So don't tell me you think you diserve moar.

AntiNorm: FloydA: If you don't like tipping, eat at home.

Actually by going to that restaurant, you are supporting the employer's choice to do less than minimum wage.

As for any products and services you pay for, you support whatever choices the seller does to make said products and services. Kinda like buying drugs supports terrorism or clothes and shoes that support sweatshops.

If you bought a computer from a certain company knowing full well that the technical support is in India, you support outsourcing and deserve any difficulties you get while on the phone trying to get rid of several trojans and virus you got from seeing 30 different tranny porn sites.
