According to FBI statistics, violent crimes reported in Arizona dropped by nearly 1,500 reported incidents between 2005 and 2008. Reported property crimes also fell, from about 287,000 reported incidents to 279,000 in the same period. These decreases are accentuated by the fact that Arizona's population grew by 600,000 between 2005 and 2008.

Two months ago, the Arizona Republic published an exhaustive report that found that, according to statistics from the FBI and Arizona police agencies, crime in Arizona border towns has been "essentially flat for the past decade." For example, "In 2000, there were 23 rapes, robberies and murders in Nogales, Ariz. Last year, despite nearly a decade of population growth, there were 19 such crimes." The Pima County sheriff reported that "the border has never been more secure."

FBI statistics show violent crime rates in all of the border states are lower than they were a decade ago -- yet Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) reports that the violence is "the worst I have ever seen." President Obama justifiably asserted last week that "the southern border is more secure today than any time in the past 20 years,"

Much of Arpaio's commercial real estate holdings are being hidden by the sheriff under a law designed to black out the home addresses of cops.

Our current county AG, while running for office last year, described visiting him like this: "Early in the conversation, Montgomery likened the Sheriff's Office to a nursing home and later said Arpaio is not as sharp as he used to be."

He is an elected official. He is investigating a complaint from a constituent. That's his job. But having a press conference to announce a secret investigation is a little strange. Usually you wait until the secret investigation is complete.

So, you are saying that a reasonable, responsible person in his position would investigate ANY concern brought to him by a constituent? Ones concerning UFOs? Leprechauns, perhaps? Seems like a responsible public figure would draw a line somewhere. I'm just saying, is all.

He says the group of investigators he's put on the job are all volunteers - ex police folks, lawyers, etc. - so it isn't costing the tax payers anything.

Still, you'd think his bosses would reign in the crazy train since he is the face of law enforcement for one of the largest cities in the nation. He's a damn embarrassment.

But he's always been a farking nutjob and he never gets thrown out on his ass. The people of Phoenix get what they deserve.
