I was in a Ford dealership the day they came out, and could have bought a 3 speed manual six cylinder model for $1500 bucks. Who had $1500 bucks in the summer of 1964? I need a time machine.

I'm sure this will be combined with a rusted hulk with a good '65 title to make as-new cars for the enthusiast but not 'collector' market. It sure beats trying to patch together a rusted out unibody car.

I owned one as a teen and one in my early twenties. I'd manage to get them both kinda sorta somewhat into cherry condition and then some asshole would rear end me. Hard. Broke the backs of 'em both times.

If you source the parts from original Mustangs you could be driving around in style, drive everybody wild, cause you'll have only one there is around: a '49, '50, '51, '52, '53, '54, '55, '56, '57, '58, '59 automobile a '60, '61, '62, '63, '64, '65, '66, '67, '68, '69, '70, 11 automobile.

All-time favorite car is the 64-68 Mustang. Would LOVE to have one right now.

Not building one from scratch for $30,000 though.

I started reading up on Alfa Romeo and to get around the emissions restrictions in the USA they kept making 1969 model year cars way after 1969 until someone finally noticed.

I had 3 back in the day. My first was a 65 pony gt. 289 hi-po T-10 4 spd. (bought it in 74 for 950 bucks :) 2nd was a regular 64 1/2. 289 3 spd 3rd was a regular 65 with a 289 3spd. all manual transmissions. those last two I had to restore. the 1st one was cherry.
I also had a 68 gt fastback. 390 gt automatic.

love the old stangs.

I would love to have a retro style (and no, new-ford-mustangs, you don't count, sit the fark down) with modern radio/transmission/etc.

First car was a '58 thunderbird, but couldn't keep the thing running (I'm no gear head and this was in 2000), it sucked gas, didn't have a radio, no door locks, and had no AC. But I loved it (and still wouldn't mind having another).

But...give me the body, the feel, but the option to replace that crap with modern convenient appliances (like...windshield wipers NOT run on a vacuum pump off the engine?)...I'd be all over.

Not for 15 farking grand though, jesus.

I met a guy who built a "Model A" from junkyard scraps. He titled it as an old Model A because it included whatever original part was required in the mind of the DMV.

Me too. Say, a 1950s tailfinned Cadillac on the outside with something equivalent to a modern CTS-V on the inside.

There were only so many Mustangs sold in Arizona.

Please Use Lube: My take on Mustang: It's a "Classic" car that inspired generations to further fund terrorism by purchasing fuel inefficient cars. Not enough? Fine -- it's produced by yet ANOTHER American company that, after several huge bailouts, has failed to change it's ways and adopt cleaner vehicles.

Okay, I'm pretty tree-hugger, but we're talking about an era where fuel efficiency was just not an issue on anyone's mind, nor was terrorism. And I'm pretty sure Ford didn't take the bailout. GM and Chrysler did.

yeah it would cost a fortune piecing one together. even if you could find a couple of old ones to scavenge some parts off of . you'd still be in the 40k + range to finish it most likely. and that's with you doing the labor.

I'm pretty sure the 1969 Camaro is the most restored vehicle. That's why Dynacorn has been re-popping 1969 Camaro bodies out since 2004 (new window).

I have been wailing for YEARS that Ford should be doing this.

If I bought one of these, I would love to put a hybrid or all-electric drive system in it. That body is like a blank canvas, waiting for inspiration. I would never race the car, but would enjoy driving cross-country on the Blue Highways at legal speeds while pulling 50+ MPG.

You gearheads out there; what's the most practical hybrid motor system that could fit in this thing? Would it have to be completely custom-designed, or is there enough off-the-shelf tech out there that it could seriously work? I'd settle for rear-wheel electric motors or Front Wheel Drive only, and a little high efficiency popper to generate the peak power and feed the lipo banks.

How would state DMV's consider this car for a license? As an antique? A custom? Would it need to have air bags and etc put in?

nice to see some enthusiasm, that's what we like. been saying for years FoMoCo should re-intro the 64 1/2 as it looked, updated under teh hood etc of course, and have hidden stamping on the body panels to keep it honest among collectors. they've done well with hinting at the old school lines - take it all the way!

just like back then, wish i could afford some of the tasty metal that's on the lots right now but i still enjoy seeing them coming down the road.
