Ryan Adams isn't worthy to sweep up the stage after Neil Finn, much less play with him on it.

Typical Fark. Quick rush to judgment, no other voices tolerated. We don't know what went on backstage, Adams hasn't been allowed to give his side. Maybe the other two provoked him? Maybe Finn made fun of his severe acne scarring? You just don't know.

I just don't care. I've never seen anything about him where he didn't come across as an insufferable twit and a prima donna, and since I don't like his music I'm less than impressed than usual that he seems to be his own biggest fan by a couple of orders of magnitude.

I don't care if he cured cancer and shat out a golden shell to hold the moon while he was backstage. I don't care if Neil Finn nailed his testicles to a balsa wood pinata stuffed with hornets instead of candy. It wouldn't make Adams less of a dick.

I really like Neil Finn's music, with Crowded House and with his brother and solo. He seems like a great guy too.

I really like Ryan Adams' music. He seems like a total dick. But he writes and sings just unbelievably great music.

I read the whole article thinking it was the "Summer of '69" guy. Now that I realize it isn't, I have absolutely no clue who Ryan Adams is. And wasn't Janis Ian the alleged lesbian in "Mean Girls?"

And that's not to mention that his expansion of the Army and Navy (despite Jefferson's objections) had lasting positive effects, especially in avoiding a full-scale war with France in 1798, and you have to give him credit for marrying Morticia and raising Wednesday and Pugsley.

Adams has some great CDs (Hearbtreaker is among the best albums of last decade) and a good deal of meh, but all in all is fairly talented.

Yeah, many musicians, actors, and other entertainers are complete douchebags who are out of touch with reality...

I once saw Ryan Adams be an onstage douche with whiskey town, and not a half hour later decide to engage me in conversation at another bar (guess my not bothering him while he sat next to me made me somehow interesting). Was a funny nice guy. Go figure.

Maybe the guy's bipolar.

Neil Finn is a great musician and has struck me as a nice guy. I would imagine it would take some effort to piss him off.

And Janis Ian is phenomenally talented. (new window)

I don't get the fawning over Ryan Adams. IMHO, he's one of the most overrated singer/songwriters of the past 20 years.

I'll take eclectic, prolific artists like Bob Schneider, Joe Henry, City and Colour, Glenn Phillips over Ryan Adams any day.

To each his own.

2011-10-29 01:04:20 PM
Yeah, Ryan Adams would have to be behaving like a total douchebag to annoy Neil Finn, one of the nicest and level-headed guys in the biz.

Joliet_Jake: The song isn't about the year 1969. You realize that, right?

That's what he says these days, but I think the "69" interpretation is revisionist history on his part. It's an effort to make the song seem a little more edgy or interesting.

First, check the title. "Summer of '69" The apostrophe suggests the year. The apostrophe is also on the cover art.

None of the lyrics even remotely suggest sex, not even in a casual way, but they ARE strongly nostalgic and constantly refer to the past.

Adams has said previously the song was originally called "The Best Days of My Life" and that the phrase "Summer of '69" initially appeared only once, suggesting "69" wasn't exactly on his mind when he wrote it, days gone by were.

So bottom line is, Bryan Adams is fibbing when he now says the "69" is a reference to the sexual position.

Ryan was born in 74, Bryan wrote 69 in 84. 84-74 = 10 years old.

shoegaze99: So bottom line is, Bryan Adams is fibbing when he now says the "69" is a reference to the sexual position.

I'd like to preface my remarks by pointing out that this doesn't matter at all.

However. Adams told people before the album was even released that the song included a pun about sex. You could google it. Moreover, the pun is obvious, and there's no other reason for that year being picked, aside from scansion and one rhyme, and other years would have worked fine.

Lastly, I direct your attention to the end of the song, when Adams (as he's confirmed, in case you can't make it out) sings "Me and my baby did sixty-nine."

The song isn't about sex, but it does contain references to oral sex, which is not, in and of itself, terribly remarkable.

/ryan adams should be so lucky
