It's strange, but I find MInecraft one of the most horrific games I have ever played. Sun goes down, Lights go on.

2011-10-28 01:37:59 PM
No Amnesia? Fail.

2011-10-28 01:38:12 PM
Just want to give a shout-out for the Shalebridge Cradle level from Thief 3.

2011-10-28 01:39:47 PM
yes, those 16 bit graphics certainly were scary.

2011-10-28 01:40:08 PM
WTF? This list sucks and the article writer should feel bad.

Quake was scarier than "Zombies Ate My Neighbors"

BioShock had it's moments too.

I'm trying to think of an actual scary game I've played, but realize that I don't play too many games that are intended to scare.

2011-10-28 01:41:06 PM
Not exactly "scary" but the secret level in Doom2 (Castle Wolfenstein) really creeped me out because it was so out of place.

2011-10-28 01:42:35 PM
That hotel in Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines.

2011-10-28 01:42:56 PM
Hardy-r-r: Just want to give a shout-out for the Shalebridge Cradle level from Thief 3.

That for some reason jogged my memory. The Ocean House level in Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines.

That was a creepy farking level, one of the best I've ever played. Even my wife was watching and jumping when stuff starts flying all over the place and the ghost fades in and out.

2011-10-28 01:43:13 PM
Dead Rising is one of the worst game franchises in history.

/To me.
//I just happen to be right all the goddamn time.

2011-10-28 01:43:29 PM
I think Half Life 2 should make this list just for the Ravenholm level.

2011-10-28 01:43:32 PM
smooshie: No Amnesia? Fail.

Came here to say this.

2011-10-28 01:44:21 PM
Spazmotic: Sun goes down, Lights go on.

You can't explain that!

2011-10-28 01:44:30 PM
The original Alone in the Dark scared the crap out of me.

2011-10-28 01:45:01 PM
How in the hell is Maniac Mansion scary?

2011-10-28 01:45:12 PM
smooshie: No Amnesia? Fail.

Came here for this.

I bought the game for next to nothing off a steam sale. I turned off the lights and put on headphones as the game recommended. I made it as far as the first time you experience darkness, and promptly slammed my laptop shut. One of those "walk it off" moments... I haven't played it since...

/sissy story, bro

smooshie: No Amnesia? Fail.

It's $4 currently as part of Steam's Halloween sale if anyone is looking for some cheap nightmare fuel.

2011-10-28 01:47:14 PM
The Uninvited? Bah!

Shadowgate was scarier, and the better game.

2011-10-28 01:48:23 PM
Spazmotic: It's strange, but I find MInecraft one of the most horrific games I have ever played. Sun goes down, Lights go on.

This, and certain levels of the first Dead Space.

2011-10-28 01:49:33 PM
No love for fatal frame?

2011-10-28 01:50:09 PM
Mad_Radhu: I think Half Life 2 should make this list just for the Ravenholm level.

Father Grigori's cheery attitude got me through Ravenholm.

/hehhehe, HAHAHAAHAAA!

The ONLY game to ever freak me out and scare me was the original Silent Hill. I can remember playing it when I was younger with my mother and sister sitting on the couch watching it like it was another movie on the screen. All three of us jumping and screaming when that stupid cat jumped out of the locker is still a priceless moment.

Rest of the games suck. Zombies Ate My Neighbors?? Really? Fun game, blast to play, but scary like a bologna sandwich...

/House of the Dead is also awesome.

DragonDeadite: Rest of the games suck. Zombies Ate My Neighbors?? Really? Fun game, blast to play, but scary like a bologna sandwich...

I'm shocked they didn't stick Plants vs. Zombies on the list, too.

2011-10-28 01:53:40 PM
I remember being pretty creeped out by the original Diablo... but mostly because it was new plus the dark graphics and creepy music. Also, I was young.

I don't remember which Resident Evil it was, but whichever ones the (dead) zombies woke up again and came dashing around the blind corners was pretty farking jumpy. Other than that, I wouldn't consider those games "scary"....

2011-10-28 01:54:42 PM
F.e.a.r.

Alma was pretty damn scary.

2011-10-28 01:54:58 PM
Hardy-r-r: Just want to give a shout-out for the Shalebridge Cradle level from Thief 3.

This. All thief games have incredible unnerving and disturbing scary levels, Return to the Cathedral in Thief 1 was quite the experience.

How can we never get a decent list, no need to get all arcade-y, no need to just mention the recent mainstream hits like dead space or left 4 dead. Theres a vast history of videogame horror and a capable list is perfectly doable. We have silent hill, fatal frame series, siren, then alone in the dark, really I could go on and on.

/especial award to the abyss in Endless Ocean, holly crap if that wasn't the scariest level ever in a game, scarier than the cradle.

2011-10-28 01:56:20 PM
I don't really get the headline. Only 3 of these games came before 1995 and 1 was from 1995. The rest came after. Unless it's only referring to the number 1 game which did come out in 1995.

Anyway, Left for Dead and Dead Rising 2 are two of my favorite games, but I wouldn't call them scary. I guess Left 4 Dead can have moments maybe - I don't know, they're not scary to me though.

2011-10-28 01:56:27 PM
There's no mention of Clive Barker's Undying or Amnesia? Give me a break. Those two games are genuinely scary and will have you laying in bed with your eyes wide open if you're dumb enough to go straight to bed after playing them like I was.

2011-10-28 01:56:36 PM
Uninvited scared the hell out of me as a kid, but did provide one of the funniest video game moments ever. The part where you try to go down through a grate in the floor and the game warns you, "there's a spider down there, you really don't want to do that." and you keep trying to go down the grate and the game keeps warning you, "seriously, its bigger than a breadbox." It will eventually let you down there, and sure enough you get killed by a giant spider and the game pretty much calls you an idiot for not listening to its warnings.

That was the REmake for Gamecube. Yeah, Crimson Heads were terrible. One time I was in danger mode on health and one leapt around a corner and smashed my face in with both hands. I was done for the day...

You have been eaten by a grue!

2011-10-28 01:58:20 PM
no love for Eternal Darkness? Not especially scary, i know; still, good ambiance, and i don't know how many times I got up and went up to the screen to try and shoo away a fly on the screen, just to see it's the damn game farking with me again.. that game has a special place in my heart for the sanity meter alone

2011-10-28 01:58:35 PM
I know I may be a bit of a wuss but I thought Alan Wake was scary. Honestly, that was one of those games where I knew I had much better stuff to do but I just had to play a little bit longer each time to see what happens.

2011-10-28 01:58:47 PM
There's an obscure title that's scary as shiat: Kuon. PS2, I think. Scared me more than Amnesia or that farking hotel in Vampire.

2011-10-28 01:59:55 PM
Count me in for a Dead Space vote.

Oh, and if anyone played "D" for PSOne, that game was creepy as hell.

// and having the disembodied voice shout "LAURA!" out of nowhere to start his next creepy rambling didn't help

2011-10-28 02:01:14 PM
Confabulat: You have been eaten by a grue!

I literally believe the course of my childhood was affected by the the first time that happened to me while playing that game. Also, when you find your way into the basement of the house and the sword begins to glow.

Yeah, I was about 8. It was scary stuff back then.

With a list like that, I'm suprised Ghosts'n Goblins wasn't on it.

Another vote for Dead Space here.

2011-10-28 02:03:52 PM
No AvP, no List.

/Man that list sucked

2011-10-28 02:04:08 PM
That Banshee scream in Shadowgate, man.

Scares the sh*t out of me every goddamn time.

Mentalpatient87: That was the REmake for Gamecube. Yeah, Crimson Heads were terrible. One time I was in danger mode on health and one leapt around a corner and smashed my face in with both hands. I was done for the day...

That was them. Evil idea... They caused me to quit playing more than once. I seem to remember you had to burn them if you wanted them to stay dead and not COMPLETELY RANDOMLY jump back to life.

smooshie: No AmnesiaPenumbra? Fail.

fixed

2011-10-28 02:04:51 PM
Anyone else feel really creeped out in BioShock when one of the enemies starts singing "Jesus Loves Me"?

Not necessarily scary, but LSD: Dream Simulator and Yume Nikki are both good at being generally unsettling and occasionally downright creepy.

2011-10-28 02:05:52 PM
Scary for a different reason: The opening (new window) of Landstalker, an action RPG for the Genesis.

You think, "holy fark, how am I supposed to make those precision jumps with mid-air turns in a 2.5D isometric overhead view?"

2011-10-28 02:05:56 PM
Two Hearted: How in the hell is Maniac Mansion scary?

Have you ever watched a hamster in a microwave?

/If only I could find some gas for this

2011-10-28 02:06:15 PM
muck4doo: Another vote for Dead Space here.

Yeah, me too. I even thought the sequel was sufficiently creepy.

/make us whole

2011-10-28 02:07:14 PM
7th Guest had a few moments that creeped me out.

And oddly enough Iron Helix scared the crap out of me. I guess it was exploring the dead crewmembers' quarters while being hunted by an unstoppable murderbot that did it.

Otherwise video games tend to be a total snorefest to me.

2011-10-28 02:07:32 PM
Terrible list is terrible.

The old Clock Tower games were scary.

Did a top 32 worst horror games list once with a friend, that was fun.
