The best way to defend our freedom is to vote every damned last congressman and senator out of office and replace them with decent human beings, and then demand that the legalized bribery of our government is once again outlawed. Short of that, nothing is going to change.

They really beat the hornet's nest with that one.

he is just a lawbreaker like the rest of the dirtbags looking for trouble.

Comment two:
You are correct sir. It is an absolute disgrace that a United States Marine would be caught associating with the saboteurs set on destroying the country.

Comment three:
THE RULE OF LAW does NOT apply to leftists. If it did, a Kenyan would not be currently occupying 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

It's scary how stupid some people are. These people drive and have jobs. Some of them are tasked with protecting us.

I really just have to admire the Marines' attitudes in this --especially given how the Oakland PD has been in the news the last couple of years or so.

I'm surprised they're not taking the cops out as a public freakin' service to the people of Oakland.

One would hope. But our military, like any military, is very nationalistic and patriotic. I couldn't see them doing anything short of defending the establishment.

No shiat. You have to wonder how it is their brains got wired into such a dysfunctional and polluted patchwork of pseudo-patriotism and simple-minded flag-waving.

Leftists? Really?!?

Maybe rounding people up and putting them into education camps (or farking elementary schools) isn't such a goddamn bad idea after all.

Nah I think we're good. Even in highly tribalized societies like Syria and Libya, a good chunk of soldiers and top brass defected to the resistance soon after being told to fire upon civilians. That strategy will nearly always fail, sooner or later. The only societies in which it succeeds are ones which draw their military from a separate, protected caste (such as in Iran and Pakistan) who can easily be made to view civilians as the enemy. Our government definitely doesn't have that sort of protection around here, and to me that's a great comfort.

Marines are required to obey the law just like everyone else. If they participate in a riot in violation of the law, they deserve what they get, just like everyone else.

Cythraul: I couldn't see them doing anything short of defending the establishment.

I disagree. They give an oath to defend the Constitution, not some temporary "establishment" group of yeahoos. There's a whole group of current and ex fire, police, military that have given further oaths to that effect.

Unfortunately, the establishment yeahoos firing flash bangs and tear gas canisters into unarmed crowds are not part of them.

Or mercenaries. They'll shoot anybody. The only reason the mercs in Lybia didn't was because they didn't want to piss off the US. They're scumbags, not stupid.

They overreacted, but they didn't attack him with the knowledge he was a marine. There was no way for them to know. Sure, "Police attack veteran" is sexier than "Police attack protesters", but really, it's asinine.

"Police attack man in wheelchair" is a different story.

Funny how these protests are peaceful until asshole cops show up pushing their weight around.

Portland cops have been pretty decent. Other than busting a couple of people for drugs, the cops just hang out and talk to the protestors.

There's this funny thing called 'end of enlistment' that means a person is wont to do whatever it is they choose when they return to civilian life.

But the police only fired tear gas after a protestor threw back a tear gas can that was fired by police.

Hmmmm... Honestly I would think it depended on the situation and the severity. But if the military were brought in (extremely highly unlikely, posse comitatus, etc...), it would be only in a situation where bystanders and/or government property were at great risk. We aren't Egypt or Syria after all.

How about "Police throw flashbang grenade into group attempting to provide medical aid to fallen protester"? Does that sound better?

2011-10-28 02:28:38 PM
Well, something had to push this around a corner. Maybe OWS will get an infusion of discipline and focus which they need. Perseverance alone isn't cutting it: they need a strong message and they need to get their image under control.

Otherwise they can expect most of the people in the country that share their problems to continue dismissing them as unwashed, lazy, entitled leeches. I had one "bootstrappy" friend note that they don't look starving enough to warrant complaining. IMAGE PROBLEM.

I can't wait to read about a protest when cops are killed.

/f'n pigs

2011-10-28 02:28:59 PM
The outcome of the events is certainly regrettable, but it's not like the gas can was purposely aimed at his face. When there's hundreds of people milling about, it's not surprising that a projectile fired into the crowd might hit someone. They were told that chemical agents would be used if they didn't disperse. Also, I don't see how the fact that he's a vet has anything to do with it, other than to inflame passions. Would there be the same outrage if it was just any other protester, or would it just be "lol, look at this hippie who got nailed"?

I have no strong feelings about the OWS protests one way or another, but damn, the shiat is going to hit the fan if the Oakland PD doesn't make nice fast.

/As well it should, at least in regards to police brutality.
//What the hell were those cops thinking when they fired into the crowd?
