It's kind of an important matter that this highlights. The 2nd amendment would not have been drawn up for a non-Christian and non-caucasian populace. It still works great in a state like North Dakota, where the population looks similar to the population for whom the Bill of Rights were intended. It's insane to allow just anyone with opposable thumbs to have a gun.

It does't seem to do much more than provide comedy headlines, horrible politicians, pollution and cartoonish stereotypes.

No, it was a bit earlier than the 80s. Texas was traditionally a two party state; fairly conservative Republicans and fairly conservative Democrats. Then Jimmy Carter and National Malaise and Fuel Lines and Inflation and the Misery Index happened. Suddenly every politician in Texas was trying as hard as hell to dissociate themselves from "that peanut-farming idiot." The Republicans seized on the momentum away from Carter and ran to the right. Democrats moved to the left in response. Reagan was a symptom of the disease that was embodied and symbolized by Carter, and would not have been successful if not for Carter's abysmal failure. Ford was much more moderate than Reagan, and he or anyone as moderate as he would have lost any primary to a more conservative candidate easily. Many prominent conservative Democrats, including the one serving in the U.S. Senate, switched parties during this time of chaos, which ran from about 1977 to about next month. The real reason Texas won't elect Democrats is fear of a repetition of Carter. The nastiest thing a Texan is likely to say about a politician is, "S/He reminds me of Carter." There are nastier words, there is no nastier content or feeling. Until those who can remember Carter's presidency (Subjectively, it was worse then than it is now. Unemployment in the state was about the same as it is now, gas prices weren't relevant as you couldn't get gas, and inflation was very high.) no longer vote, or there is another major shift in the parties, Texas will remain a Republican stronghold.

/fiscal conservative, social liberal here
//would like a better choice than either party we have now
