A little blame-the-victim and he-wasn't-always-crazy balance in a story that deserves no balance:
"And Katy Benoit, the graduate student and former lover he gunned down in August before killing himself, had her own demons, suffering from bipolar disorder, depression and drug abuse, according to the documents. Bustamante's transcripts from Old Dominion University show he was a straight-A student, save for one B in an ergonomics class. The files released by the UI also detail an extensive research and publication record after he was hired in 2007 and that Bustamante was nominated for a teaching award in 2009. He was also a whiz with behavioral analysis software.

Yes. What you've heard is true. All psych departments are crazy:
Within six days of the killings, the inevitable happened. A certain sense of normalcy had returned to Bustamante's department as those he'd left behind sought to reorganize their professional lives. "In a faculty meeting we briefly discussed using Ernie's office as overflow space for graduate students this year," [Benjamin Barton, an assistant psychology professor] wrote Aug. 29. "I'm also wondering if I might be able to use it for lab space, even if it's just for this year." Last paragraphs: http://www.idahostatesman.com/2011/10/28/1856295/second-guessing-was-r ampant-after.html

And this is her formal complaint. The [LIST REDACTED] is about 15 items long. It is clear, concise, better written than most of the articles that describe this tragedy and much, much better written than most academic papers. There's a PDF out there, too. For the non-PDF, see:

Because if one tragedy occurs the entire teaching staff is suddenly free of their responsibility to try and provide professional services to students?

Yeah yeah. Go Vandals and all that crap.

The real story is that across the border in Pullman there is the WSU dairy and it is putting out insanely great cheeses every year. Sometimes these make their way into Costcos in the Puget Sound region, but you can order from them online.

I'm hooked on the Cougar Gold cheddar. The smoked and flavored cheeses weren't my thing, but the aged cheddar is outstanding.

I'm sure I feel bad for the woman in the article, but seriously, this is really good cheese.

Prof in fatal shooting had been tied to 'sex orgies'

Aren't all orgies sex orgies? A non-sex orgy sounds boring.

Plus the fact that he liked to have sex is clearly related to him shooting people. Every single person ever in history who has shot someone, enjoyed sex. It's a disturbing trend.

If he was drunk or high, everyday, that would not have aroused suspicion.

I got the impression, from the article, that he was coercing some women into having sex.

which wold be wrong and stuff

In my experience, psych students and profs are usually the ones in most dire need of prefessional counseling and clinical analysis... not to mention aggressive euthanasia.

Knew a psych student who routinely went for the slightly damaged women, made himself out to be the understanding and caring man who could be their knight in shining armor and all, only to emotionally depress and abuse them. Royal A-hole, indeed! This was all the more excessive due to his narcissism, which actively prevented him from doing ANY kind of self-scrutiny and maybe realize what a bastard he really was.

Another psych student friend of mine is very sweet and often aggressively naive, especially about physical relationships and such. She's got a great big heart, but it must've sucked all the juice outta her brain. At least I think her heart and patience make her a better listener than most of them.

How do you "coerce" a woman into having sex? Sounds a lot like one of those "well I was drunk and regretted it the next day, so it's rape" claims...

I had an English prof my freshman year who actually looked a lot like Colonel Sanders who liked to drink before our night class.

A couple of times he would be writing on the board and the writing would get progressively worse as the alcohol he had been drinking right before class took effect. His sentences would start out straight, then start to curve down the further he wrote across the board until they were almost vertical.

It was rather amusing but sad. Then he would start slurring his words and then tell us class was dismissed.

Class was actually one of the better classes in my college career.

One of my friends is a food science grad student up there and he gave the their cheese in a can. At first I was confused as to why you would ever put cheese in a can but it was so delicious that I didn't care anymore. I now get them shipped to me for exorbitant prices even though I'm broke like some crack ho that needs a fix.

Psych is what trouble people take in an attempt to figure a solution to own problems. They just don't seem to realize that when everyone is searching for solutions to their own problems, they can't help find solutions to yours.

This.Once upon a time I pursued a career in mental health treatment as a psychiatric social worker. Got the MSW, worked around in hospitals and clinics, the works. Half, if not two-thirds (including myself) were there trying to figure out how to un-fark themselves. Unfortunately, only a handful of us managed that insight and got out of the profession.
