It's not the worst argument. Peyton is obviously the best case to be made for it.

It seems to me that you would rarely take full responsibility for your injuries. Most of the time, they're accidents that are just part of the game.

It's not like Joe Theismann got mangled by Lawrence Taylor and said, "My bad. This one is on me."

So he couldn't possibly, you know, work out on his own during the lockout?

\ya, I'm going there

I guess the person to truly blame would be to say I should've thought more about it. ... I probably should have taken more time rehabbing initially, and that's again stubbornness of me thinking I'm going to be OK, and I'm just going to work through pain.

Yeah, what a jerk, blaming other people.

Working out on your own is not the same as game-speed practices, or even preseason games. This is why holdouts always have bad seasons when they hold out. The lockout, given the time and practices lost, amounts to a league-wide holdout, which is why some teams have offenses and others have defenses that are only now getting it together, along with unusually long stays on the disabled list for a lot of players.

2011-10-28 12:29:59 AM
I've seen the lockout really affect the cheerleaders. They just aren't as slutty as last year.

Well, he did. That was the problem. His knee didn't fully heal and he didn't have a trainer to tell him to take it easy. Not that he couldn't afford one....

I'm more interested in the new rule for practicing on bye weeks and how it's affecting teams.

Teams are 3-9 coming out of byes so far. Mind you, some shiatty teams have had their byes early.

Personal trainer? Team orthopedic surgeon? It's kinda like the difference between rich and wealthy.

Nice try, trollmitter. Yes, he does say this:

"I fell 100 percent that I'm a casualty for the season of the lockout," Cooley said Thursday. "I think it was a shame that they didn't let players who had surgery spend time with the doctors and trainers they trust on daily basis, I wish I could've."

But he also says this:

"I can do things at home, but it's a shame it is the way it is, and there's no one to blame. I guess the person to truly blame would be to say I should've thought more about it. ... I probably should have taken more time rehabbing initially, and that's again stubbornness of me thinking I'm going to be OK, and I'm just going to work through pain. That's how I've got through my entire career and it's always worked, and it didn't work this time."

And this:

"I want to help the team. I can't hold them hostage," Cooley said. "I can't go into coach Shanahan's office and say, 'You're going to give me seven weeks, and you're going to hold a roster spot for me while I hopefully get better.' That's not fair to anybody."

Yeah, sounds like a real dick. Or, you know, not.

2011-10-28 03:48:00 AM
Cooley is a good tight end. He will be back.
Probably with a better understanding of who is responsible for his body.

2011-10-28 06:43:04 AM
Meh. So what? It's not like he's suing the team or the league or anything. What does it matter who's "responsible"?

And in any case, if the team didn't want their players to screw around with their own health, maybe they should have come to an agreement on the CBA sooner, so they could force them to rehab under the supervision of the team's trainers.

GAT_00: It's not the worst argument. Peyton is obviously the best case to be made for it.

Manning, probably not. That neck probably would've needed surgery lockout or no.

Hillis might have a bit of a point, though.

2011-10-28 07:28:06 AM
Local sports talk radio guys are saying that, with the ascension of Fred Davis and the injury history, Cooley has likely (70/30) played his last game as a Redskin. I kind of hope not, just because he seems like one of the few out and out good guys on the team, and I'd like to see him stay a 'skin for his entire career.

Chris Cooley has missed 20 games in the past 3 seasons due to injury, has big roster bonuses due and is now in the shadow of two much younger players in Davis and Paulsen. Unless he agrees to a pay cut and to play special teams next year he will be released.

huge roster bonus my ass. 3.8 million is piss in the nfl. He's 29 years old and has only ever had two major injuries. The broken ankle and the knee. Thats it. If he's healthy they'll keep him.

2011-10-28 09:34:22 AM
I like Cooley, good guy, but he should have concentrated on getting rehab from really anywhere and less on his pottery. Of course maybe he thought nailing his smokin hot wife at game speed was enough of a workout!

2011-10-28 10:02:42 AM
Sounds like Cooly is a farking cock sucking moron.

Who doesn't get rehab for that shiat?

basemetal: He and others kind of have a point.

I thought the article made the better point:

ASHBURN, Va. -- The NFL has made Chris Cooley a millionaire many times over. During the NFL lockout, when he was banned from working with the Washington Redskins' training staff, he could've hired the best physical therapists around to help him with the left knee that was feeling stiff from surgery in January.

Instead, he figured he would handle it himself. He didn't think the knee was that bad.

2011-10-28 10:37:33 AM
I tried to go to Redskin rehab
They said No No No

2011-10-28 10:39:59 AM
Meanwhile, Cooley says he's inspired by the vision of running through the tunnel at the Super Bowl in a Redskins uniform.

Those must be some dynamite painkillers he's taking.

spacechicken170am: 3.8 million is piss in the nfl. He's 29 years old and has only ever had two major injuries. The broken ankle and the knee. Thats it. If he's healthy they'll keep him.

$3.8 million is a BIG roster bonus, 29 is old for an NFL tight end, and two MAJOR injuries are a big deal. Mark Bavaro had knee injuries, and was basically done at 27. The Giants let him go, and while he hung around for a few more years in the NFL, he was never the same.

You obviously like Chris Cooley so your opinion is tainted by that, but I wouldn't want my team keeping someone like that around. Then again, the Redskins almost never do the right thing, so maybe you'll get your wish.

2011-10-28 10:51:36 AM
As a Cowboys fan, I'm glad he's not playing this year. He always managed to have big catches against Dallas. I do wish that he rehabs and comes back... just not with the Redskins.

I love Chris Cooley. I have his jersey, I've read his blog/website. He's a very entertaining and likeable guy. That being said, if I were Redskins management, I'd try to cut a deal with a team that needs a solid TE. The offensive effectiveness to cost ratio isn't good. It's not that much of a downgrade from Cooley to Davis, or Cooley to Paulson in 2 TE sets. For that money I'd rather have them sign more offensive or defensive linemen. Orakpo's deal is up soon and will need a payday. In all honesty they need a new CB as well.

I don't expect to see Moss or Cooley in burgundy and gold again.

basemetal: He and others kind of have a point.

What point? Other than players simultaneously arguing that both the season is too long and they don't have time to rest and recover and that the lockout didn't give them enough time to work out and rehab?

Redskins suck. Cut him and bring in someone old and over pay them

merkey88: That being said, if I were Redskins management, I'd try to cut a deal with a team that needs a solid TE.

Well yeah that would be ideal for the Redskins, but I doubt teams are lining up to give up a draft pick for a 29-year-old TE they know will be released in March. I mean, Dan Snyder owns the one team that WOULD do that, and Al Davis is dead. That really limits the options.

And NFL seems to be very deep at the TE position. I can't think of one team who's #1 need is a TE.

Well at least now he will have a lot more time to work on his pottery (new window)

GimpyNip: I like how someone wrote, 'he's only had two injuries!' and then lists the two worst possible injuries a player can have. 'hey, I think he still has his Achilles!'

Yeah, not even mentioning his concussion issues. Frankly, the way he got drilled on the play where he hurt his "hand" earlier this year, I'm not convinced some of that didn't come back.

2011-10-28 12:42:15 PM
I remember a few years ago when Clinton Portis blamed the pre-season for his injuries.

People get hurt when playing a sport like football or even training for it. Man up nancy.

Didn't Cooley also take a picture of his wang and upload it to Twitter? Naked playbook reading time, I believe.

As a Fred Davis owner, I'm OK with this.

2011-10-28 01:29:45 PM
As a 2 time pro bowler he had the funds available to go to see those top of the line physical therapists. Instead he sat on the couch in his underwear and played X-box, oh wait, that was me.

Come on, where does personal responsibility step in? I guess with the new rules in place, football players are really turning into sissies.

I'm sympathetic to this, but first, a question:

If he's under contract and gets treatment or a procedure that is outside the supervision of the team doctors and something goes wrong, does the team have the right to void the contract? If so, would it not behoove him to wait to get the treatment until the team can supervise it?

yo momma is looking to draft one
TE is making a resurgence this year. I know Cooley isn't the best option for a team, esp with 5 or so good TE prospects in the draft next year. But don't underestimate the importance of a solid TE.

I couldn't find a good grinning Vick one (though there are plenty of them that could be used for "he mad" or maybe "3 fumbles in a game? challenge accepted" or something like that). Maybe I'll give it a spin later...
