This kind of action only works vs. people with a conscience. Without a moral compass, China is tone deaf to this kind of protest.

Thumbs down, The leading part of the headline should've said similar to "10th monk honors first 9 monks sacrifice by setting himself on fire...etc"

Headline itself does not provide a strong enough implication for 'imitation' for the pun word substitution.

why don't those lazy monks get jobs? they don't even know what they're protesting.

Ya; it's almost as bad as hunger strikes. "Excuse me, Mr. Ghandi, but if you're not gonna eat that rice..."

Or people who do walks for charity. There's absolutely no way walking is going to get anyone any closer to a cure for cancer.

What the hell is up with Buddhists and setting themselves on fire? This is the Tet Offensive all over again.
What do they think it will do? People will say think you're just some crazy person looking to kill yourself. I mean, it's great that you feel so passionate about your cause that you're willing to set yourself on fire and possibly injure others in the process, but this is not the way to conduct civil disobedience.

I do wish that Tibet had its own Arab Spring, but I know that it would end badly, what with the People's Army and all.

Immolation is the act of sacrificing using fire. Self immolation is sacrificing ones self using fire.

I can't decide if this is the stupidest or most brilliant troll I've ever seen.

According to Nietzche, this is what happens when people are dominated by others and are not capable of overcoming their oppressors: they turn their aggression inward.

Now, set that man on fire, and you'll keep him warm the rest of his life.

Actually a friend of mine walked 60 miles in 3 days. She raised a lot of pledge money while defeating the common American stereotype simultaneously.

You're missing the point. The pledge money helped. The walking didn't. People pledged money to the cause because they believed in the cause, not because they gained some value from the walking. The walking is just to make people feel like they're doing something for the donations.

It's a little of both. Yes, I know about the fruit stand guy. I was just observing that throughout the last few decades, a lot of buddhists have been the ones self-immolating. Most others just do flagellation.

The walking made the contributions larger as the pledgers agreed to give their amount per mile walked. Also, in my friend's case, a family member succumbed to the disease, so the walking was very valuable both to her & the research fund. What point am I missing again?

I'm sure the average citizens of the PRC would be outraged if they were actually aware such an incident took place. Enough outraged citizens might force a change in state policy.

However, since the average citizen will never hear of these incidents thanks to state controlled media and China has proven resistant to external pressure, nothing will be accomplished here.

I keep wondering if some of the OWS people feel pushed to this point. I know a few people in the 25-30 age range who haven't been able to find work for years now.

It's that age where you still have a bit of crazy activist left in you, but you don't yet have the wisdom to realize that killing yourself isn't worth it.

You're missing the fact that walking doesn't make cancer go away any more than eating hot dogs or skinning puppies. Your friends would raise a lot more money if they did something constructive in exchange for donations, or save a lot of money if they just accepted donations without the overhead of organizing a cancer walk.

It's against the ToS: Images which depict people actually dying (falling to their death, being killed in various ways - e.g. shot, maimed/tortured, etc.) should never be posted or linked to.

I would recommend reporting yourself to the moderators using the Notify link at the bottom of the page to minimize the odds of getting a time-out.
