Make about five thousand more of these, and we can finally attack the Stone Wizard Keep at the base of the Infinite Mountains. I'm glad to see something with an immediate practical application.

I think they're looking more into medical rehabilitation technology. Instead of a wheel chair you use a one of these modified with handles like the one shown in the final clip in the video. I'm no doctor, but it seems like anything that would get a recovering patient's circulation moving would be beneficial.

I really like the rehab angle. However, I would question it's safety for someone going to PT to regain range of motion, unless the person has enough control to prevent the bot from making the full range. For example, a few years ago I suffered a pretty nasty tib/fib and the majority of my PT was regaining looseness about my ankle. This sort of thing would have been great as long as I could prevent it from over extending my ankle when my right leg made it's motions. If it can't restrict movement and is stuck making a full step like a normal person it's dangerous because it could force/encourage a tear. Otherwise, great idea!

Passive walking systems are definitely quite interesting, but what makes this system especially interesting is that they have approached it from the perspective of making one with the best mechanics for load, efficiency and wear:

It's one thing to make a passive walker, but to make one that can handle a decent load, resist wear and keep going with the fewest parts/minimal friction loss has a lot of potential. To support a load bearing structure that does not "go up and down" while the legs are walked forward requires a pretty elegant design to get the level of performance you would need for real-world applications.

Wheels are great, but not every environment lends itself to wheels - an old lady pushing a walker doesn't loose much energy going over a bump on the path, but it briefly stops all her forward momentum. If the walker has feet, it would require the same amount of energy to get "over" the bump but it wouldn't stop by bumping into it.
