So he takes money from the drug dealers, gives it to the cops, and they let him keep 20% Where do I sign up?

I love the 'proceeds of crime' laws regulations. And still waiting for when the government steals that money from the poor drug dealer, that one day the drug dealer tells the government to prove 'beyond a shadow of a doubt' in court, that the money did indeed come from illegal drug sales.

/Who's the real criminal here anyways? The cops for getting free blow and cash or the drug dealer who gets immunity for ratting out his buddies for not going legit and getting into the pharmaceutical industry(patented drugs sold out of the pharmacy for 500% above cost).

an informant codenamed "Tom" was paid in March 2006 for "sustenance over the next four years".

$200K would get me a shiatload of "sustenance", I can tell you that. However, since it was already four years ago, the odds of this dolt having any of it left are a) slim and b) none.

I wonder if Australia would pay off my student loans?

They would be flummoxed as to why you need loans to pay for school...

That article reads like a damn fark thread, with money changing hands back and forth (including a trip to Switzerland, no less) so many times, and dollar amounts not adding up in ways that made my head want to explode. I'd elaborate but I don't have that much time.

Also, I would love to see someone at the "assistant director" level of the DEA (or similar federal or state agency) get busted for trying to import 120 kilos of pseudoephedrine. I mean, if that happened in America, the "war on drugs" would be immediately de-funded, right?

DNRTFA but in general as cocaine dealer isn't likely to be a bigger menace to society than a cop who is fired for being corrupt but gets to keep a pension, or sometimes even their job (this happens), or some money laundering "legit" offshore investment what-have-you tycoon and those assholes are a) taken down a lot less often than coke/drug dealers and even when they are they serve less time and seldom have every asset, personal and family, stripped from them.

But some asshole dealer; or, often, regular non-pro "dealer". Someone who does not sell to kids or maybe even works a square job but likes to party and supplements income to a few adult pals who just buy for personal use.

I'm not pro-cocaine or even pro-cigarette. Some shiat I do is easily argued as unhealthy, but in terms of doing harm to others as being how we honestly judge what kind of crime is what and how reviled someone is for doing this thing then compare the harm done by crooked people in positions of financial or social authority to victims to the kind of harm done by a large number (possibly the majority) of people selling drugs in the eyes of the law and how they are prosecuted and regarded.

/SRSLY, not a drug-dealer; hardly a "drug" consumer.
//But I've for-real known more drug dealers who have honestly just paid for college or liked to party with drugs but wanted to do so on the cheap than can be just coincidence.
///And I've had some really jacked up encounters with people on drugs, like gun-shiat and just really scary stuff, but even then I think more material damage has been done to my by people I'll never meet or even hear about through financial machinations. And I can't opt-out of that shiat. If I choose to go score grass from some place and it's gets sketchy, well I friggin' knew that was a chance.

So long as you give the cops their cut, that could work.

/I hate to say anything that could be construed as positive about American LEOs, but their counterparts down-under are just as bad if not worse
