FTFA: Obama supporters aren't exactly coordinating attacks with Perry. But the Texas governor and national Democrats are reinforcing and amplifying a single, sharply negative message that benefits them both: that Romney is a soulless political opportunist who doesn't deserve the presidency.

"I'm running for office for Pete's sake"

I actually gained respect for Romney after he said that. After the Bush years the last people I want in charge are the true believers. I thought I hated soulless politicians, but now I know there is much worse.

In a world where "attack at the weakest point" is standard doctrine, I have to agree they are right on target. The stereotypical politician is hated in this country right now and Romney is precisely that.

True, which is why I'd rather have Romney than Perry. But Romney is pretty shiatty too.

A statement Obama should make in a future debate with Romney:

"Let me be clear, I believe my opponent has been unfairly criticized in some instances as a flip-flopper. I would offer this: All politicians have a constituency they serve. Now, a conservative politician running in a liberal-leaning state like Massachusetts might include, in their platform, ideas that represent what their constituency wants more than they do. When that candidate moves to the national stage, they modify that platform to better represent a larger group of people. I believe that it is okay for a politician to deviate slightly from their personal opinions to better represent the people trying to get them elected; but it is NEVER okay for a politician to piece together a platform that doesn't represent their personal convictions and principles--just to win an election. It's up to you to decide whether the national Romney platform is based on his true principles, or if he is just telling people what they want to hear. You should have an accurate view of all the candidates' principles, and vote for the right person for you; because I can tell you, once you win an election, you have to start picking your battles, and what you'll end up fighting for is what you really believe in."

Isn't that almost word for word what Hagbard Celine said in the Illuminatus Trilogy?

Tough call. Are there really any areas in which Romney isn't going to do something evil but that Perry, due to his being a true believer, is? Because if not, I'll take the guy with a soul and some compassion. It isn't like Romney is some moderate on social issues, unless I haven't been paying enough attention. Beyond that, the ignorant guy may prove less capable of doing damage than the more intelligent guy who wants to feed big business.

Rick Perry proudly trumpets that Texas schools teach creationism. That's enough for me to never want to see him within 100 yards of elected office.

"It plays into concerns the primary voters have that he can't be trusted [and it's] equally important in a general election against an incumbent president people like and trust.

Really? When did a majority of people start liking BO again?

Far more people like and trust Obama than any of the GOP hopefuls. And remember, he's not competing against Generic Republican, but against very specific people at this point.
