I'm starting to think the whole "Pluto's not a planet" thing is just because a bunch of high ranking astronomy nerds are bitter that they didn't discover Eris first.

/They could have made history, instead they made drama.

What's the difference between a "frozen atmosphere" and an icy surface?

They invented a reason
That's why it stings
They don't think you matter
Because you don't have pretty rings
I keep telling you I don't care
I keep saying there's one thing they can't change

I'm your moon
You're my moon
We go round and round
From out here, it's the rest of the world that looks so small
Promise me
You will always remember who you are

Let them shuffle the numbers
Watch them come and go
We're the ones who are out here
Out past the edge of what they know
We can only be who we are
It doesn't matter if they don't understand

I'm your moon
You're my moon
We go round and round
From out here, it's the rest of the world that looks so small
Promise me
You will always remember who you are

Who you were
Long before
They said you were
No more

Sad excuse for a sunrise
It's so cold out here
Ice and silence and dark skies
As we go round another year
Let them think what they like, we're fine
I will always be right here next to you

I'm your moon
You're my moon
We go round and round
From out here, it's the rest of the world that looks so small
Promise me
You will always remember who you are

TrojanRabbit: What's the difference between a "frozen atmosphere" and an icy surface?

I think that it's that the frozen atmosphere sometimes isn't frozen. But I could be wrong.

If Pluto is a planet, then Eris isn't the tenth planet. It's the seventeenth.

Can't they just point the Hubble at the planet instead of relying on an artist's impression?

Yeah, this. There are either eight planets, or lots. In no sense can there ever be nine planets again.

germ78: Can't they just point the Hubble at the planet instead of relying on an artist's impression?

The Hubble isn't big enough to resolve any features on Eris small enough to make a good picture. This is the best it can do with Pluto:

Getting above the atmosphere only helps you so much. The size of the mirror still limits how clearly you can see objects.

I think that it's that the frozen atmosphere sometimes isn't frozen. But I could be wrong.

That's plausible. Planetary scientists (in large part Jim Elliot of MIT) hoped there would be a chance to get a probe to Pluto during the summer when the atmosphere was atmosphere instead of glaze. Pluto Express is likely to be too late.

Ladies and gentlemen I give you the result of the failing US public education system.

2011-10-28 10:13:30 AM
I'm pretty sure that someone not having knowledge of how the Hubble Space Telescope works beyond knowing that it looks at stuff in space isn't a real indicator of anything to do with the public education system.

Most people tend to not bother with the details of things far outside their realm of expertise.

Perhaps a housewife should call out your education for not knowing the difference between puree and julienne on a blender, or something equally ludicrous in nature?
