FTFA: " The letter added that operating a swingers' club "disturbs the peace of others of ordinary sensibilities and violates community standards of public decency.""

Yeah, they disturbed the peace so much that it went on for four months before anyone reported it.

/Bangor Daily? Heck, twice if you have time.

Sex clubs are something you might expect in a big city, but not in a sleepy place like Sanford, said resident Destiny Flaherty, 18.

"I knew we were getting bad, but I didn't think it was this bad," she said. "It's out of control."

Destiny? Aren't you old enough to be a stripper now?

2011-10-27 09:57:26 AM
There were no signs of prostitution, drugs or other criminal violations at the club, Connolly said. Cars with license plates from Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut and New York were in the parking lot.

But the town's code enforcement officer sent a letter to the catering firm's owners, Jim and Susan Colley, informing them they were in violation of several town codes. The letter added that operating a swingers' club "disturbs the peace of others of ordinary sensibilities and violates community standards of public decency."

...because two police officers decided not to mind their own farking business.

Well, if your looking for a cheap nondiscript building with a lot of space and a bar already in place, you can't do much better than a former KoC hall.

What's wrong with some sex? I guess the fact they weren't invited.

When I lived in Sanford, I actually went to Knights' meetings there (and by 'meetings' I mean drinking.

FTA: "Nothing criminal was going on, but town officials have ordered a local catering business to stop holding the sex parties inside its leased banquet hall."

So in other words, the caterers can tell the town officials to fark off.

So what. If people are consenting and no laws are being broken (no drugs, no minors, no professionals), whats the harm. Small government means staying out of peoples lives.

TFA: When two undercover officers paid the $30 admission fee for a couple and attended a party there on Oct. 15, police said, they came away appalled.

They were so appalled they stayed for a couple of hours. Just to be sure.

We rent our KoC hall out to Hindus a couple of times a month because they haven't built their own temple or whatever. It's kinda funny/weird to have a meeting with a crucifix on the wall and on another wall there are Hindu icons. It kinda shows how alike we all are.

HA, It amused me that one of the commenter said, "If you are going to do this..do it in your own private home..hopefully you live in the country where you don't have close nosy neighbors. Someone obviously complained and the police had to act. For the complainer... MYOB"

Clearly he didn't think of the parking situation... One would literally need to own a pretty expensive home in the country in order to host these sort of parties.

once, i went to a costume party. i was shocked by the open wearing of costumes everywhere in that place. everywhere i turned around there was a costume being worn and nobody was hiding it -- boom, it was there.

Arkham: So what. If people are consenting and no laws are being broken (no drugs, no minors, no professionals), whats the harm. Small government means staying out of peoples lives.

Because "small government" means that the government gets involved in whatever offends my delicate sensibilities and stays out of wherever my personal view of "too much government" starts.

It has nothing to do with government actually staying out of peoples lives.

It's just another way of saying "I want you to do what I want. But I'm too much of a pussy to express those opinions openly".

If you've ever been to Sanford, you know how disturbing this truly is. My guess is that it was about 4 50-year-old overweight women getting pounded by about 40 skinny rake-men with bad teeth.

0x1a4: Wow, consenting adults having sex. What's the problem? Really?

Stop forcing your morality on others. Consent is overrated.

2011-10-27 10:25:46 AM
I find it most interesting that even though the two officers were, quote, "appalled", there was no arrests issued or even any tickets. There was no law violated. From the article: "There were no signs of prostitution, drugs or other criminal violations at the club" - This was a statement from the police chief himself!

That means these two undercover officers have allowed their own opinions, not the law, determine their actions about this situation. It seems to me that this is highly unethical.

There are no laws against consenting adults meeting, connecting or even complete random strangers fornicating for free.

So you know what Police did? Simply ask the caterers to stop and to take it even further, Issue a press release condeming a legal party, complete with personal information of the catering owners.

That is also unethical, If the party was illegal, then sure, it is the business of the police. If it is not, it is of no interest to the law enforcement and any further actions are not in their scope of practice.

This is government action to impose values and morality of a select group on others. Lacking any judicial actions, the Police has resorted to publicity to punish those that has committed no crimes.

What is most deploring about this entire episode is that this is an abuse of governmental power for a non-governmental purpose.

Actually, unless you are pretty selective, most of those clubs are full of do not want.

Free country, huh?

I think the whole idea of the swinger party sounds gross, but there are lots of things people do that I don't agree with. That doesn't give me the right to force them to stop and not be the a-hole in the equation.

They weren't hurting anyone, they weren't breaking any laws, they were discrete enough that it went on for months unnoticed... they should be allowed to continue. You don't want your kids growing up thinking they want to get involved in it? Raise them properly, don't draw undue attention to the behavior you find personally objectionable (like by stamping it out whenever you find it) and then when they're adults respect your children's decision on the matter. If you can't do that then you're part of what's wrong with America today.

Yeah. We all struggle with the remnants of ancient superstitions from our more primitive past.

That's pretty much how it goes.

FTA: News of a sex club in town came as a surprise to some townspeople. Sanford, a former textile mill town with 20,000 residents, has conservative values and church-going people, Connolly said.

Which means nobody noticed anything or cared, someone heard about it and got all bent because there were ungodly copulations afoot and how can we hope for God's Blessing if there's Weird and Unnatural Fornications and all. Untaxable Sexual Congress even, since the money just offsets the cost of food and DJ.

Arkham: So what. If people are consenting and no laws are being broken (no drugs, no minors, no professionals), whats the harm. Small government means staying out of peoples lives.

Because very, very few people really want small government. Everyone says they do but very, very few really want it. Just about everyone has an opinion about something they want the government to force on everyone else.
