If you lived in those days, it brings back cool memories. Right down to the GTO...cept mine was gold with hide-away headlights.

I did, but I was closer to the age of Mitch than Pink. Spent a good deal of the late 70s hiding out from Tommy Whathisface in his flat black Camaro. The dick.

Reminded me of this guy:

Dazed and Confused is great but Stand By Me is the better coming of age movie.

The only Dylan in the film is Hurricane, and it fits really well with the scene its in.

Can you tell I didn't RTFA?

I wouldn't call it a "coming of age story". That suggests it's some sappy John Hughes movie.

2011-10-27 12:29:45 AM
I was in high school when this movie hit VHS. Could probably still quote it. It was pretty much mandatory viewing along with Up In Smoke, Monty Python and The Quest For The Holy Grail, and that Pantera "Watch it Go" video when.... uh, "praying to the spirit winds." And yes, growing up in Texas I could believe that the mom would have pulled a shotgun on Ben Affleck. Great flick. Might watch it again for old times sake.

/ without the praying. Stupid work and responsibilities.

Snapshot of High School life, Texas, in the '70s. I could relate.

And it posed some pretty heavy dilemmas: Where do we score some beer? How do we keep from getting our asses beaten by the seniors? Where do we find some easy girls? Where's the cool party at? What the hell is there to do in this town at night besides drive around shooting the shiat, causing some minor property damage, and getting wasted? What is it about Matthew McConaughey that gets him laid so much? What the hell happened to Jason London? And what the hell is Ben Affleck's major malfunction?

You know, timeless questions for the ages.

2011-10-27 12:43:06 AM
18 years huh? Wow. I keep getting older, but those high school girls stay the same age.

It's weird how people can be nostalgic about shiatty times they didn't experience firsthand. It was all AM radio in the 70's, and most of it was terrible. Like "Wildfire" and Terry Jacks.

I also hated the 80's, too, what with Haircut 100, Men at Work and that shiat.

When people remember the past it is most likely because they didn't have to live through it. Tthere is an effect in which they emphasize the good stuff from back then and forget all the dross people had to wade through to just to listen to that, but I suppose that's true of every generation.

And there is no farking way I would include myself as part of any generation, because the people who that are sheep.

Want to get drunk quickly?

Take a shot every time Mitch touches his nose.

You'll be drunk in about 30 minutes.

I watched that movie once with my mom and my aunt. It was hilarious.

They kept guessing the negative consequence to whatever was happening. Smoking pot while at a kegger? Cops are gonna show up and bust them I bet. underage sex? ok so she gets pregnant. party all night then drive to get Aerosmith tickets? then get a DUI or have a wreck.

Then when it was over they both said "That's it? what was it supposed to be about??"

2011-10-27 12:54:11 AM
Cool movie. Sort of a updated, stoner version of American Graffiti.

Slow Ride.

What if we were forced to party with somebody after sarcastically claiming we'd like it?

I was in high school when that came out. I had long hair and looked just like Slater. I got all kinds of shiat for it. I didn't smell as strongly of pot as he did though.

Dude, we should go to funerals and hospitals and remind people how worthless praying is, and let them know how they're part of the herd. Then drive the point home at the juvenile cancer wards, and tell them how those cancerwalks and telethon drives they participated in won't do "a damn thing" cause the pharmaceutical companies have a vested interest in keeping the herd sick for profit.

Then after that, could go to a bar and complain to the bartender about all the good beers on tap that he's missing. Really let him know what an uncultured beast he is.

Jim_Callahan: It was a snapshot movie

Yep. I spent most of my youth in a small, rural Texas town(that was next to a rather large city) and I can say that Dazed and Confused was pretty much dead on. In fact, this was pretty much our unofficial school song in high school. (^)

A key part of Dazed and Confused though it's never stated is that the teens were listening to AOR, Album Oriented Rock, stations, which were FM stations. Want to hear Foghat? Yeah that's on an FM station. Aerosmith? You better believe the only place to find it is FM.

And don't be dissin Haircut 100.

It's based a couple of generations past my own, but I love this movie. Really, except for the clothes and hairstyles, it's timeless. It's the same bullshiat every group of teenagers go through (Or at least went through. It seems like kids now just stand around our mall entrance...).

Every weekend a car load of us drove around the city aimlessly, looking for something to do and cursing how boring our nights were. I would give anything for one more night like that.

i graduated from hope high school (hope, arkansas) 1994. aside from the hair, the clothes, and the cars, this movie was spot-on with the early-90s in small town arkansas

Except that they got away with a shiat-ton more than our generation did and the current generation is even more repressed, thanks to the generation that got away with everything.
