I think the numbers are a stretch but there's no ignoring the surge of popularity zombies have gotten in recent years. Hopefully they'll overtake sparkly vampires and emo werewolves entirely someday.

What do Wall Street and zombies have in common? On the one hand you have rapacious, soulless ghouls who feed without remorse on the innocent.

Then there are the zombies.

So what is the hook of that show? What makes it stand out from the hundreds or thousands of zombie movies?

Beeblebrox: So what is the hook of that show? What makes it stand out from the hundreds or thousands of zombie movies?

A lot of the hype for that show comes from the comic. The comic is a very well-written series where the zombies are merely a plot device, not the main antagonists. In the comic, the humans are the "walking dead" & the zombies are just another obstacle along with diminishing resources, lack of shelter, general anarchy, and some seriously sick f*cks out there in the world. The AMC series got a lot of cred by bringing on not only Kirkland, who wrote the comic, but Frank Darabont, everyone's favorite Stephen King adapter.

The series itself has veered wildly from the comic but still has some really good, tense moments. Also, it's written with complete gender blindness. Zombies are unheard-of in the world of TWD, evidently not even voodoo zombies, so it's interesting to watch how people react to the situation. The transition from zombies as big-bad to just day-to-day survival has been slow but you can see it's begun. This season we've got 1 missing girl, a guy dying of blood poisoning after getting a cut on his arm, and a boy shot by a hunter whose bullet went clean through a deer & hit the kid. Some close calls w/zombies but all wounds so far have been due to humans or benign objects.

Agreed on all accounts. I've been a Zombie fan for almost all of my life and what makes a good Zombie story is what makes a good any story, it's the characters and the way they interact with the opposition. I'll never forget when I saw "Night of the living dead" for the first time. The scene where the survivors try to decide what to do just blew me away. My favorite part is that Cooper is correct, the basement did turn out to be the safe spot. (new window)
