the bigger news is that the protesters plan to defy the cops and re-take the park this evening.

I'm with you there. Not that I want to see people get hurt, but I do want them to be sent fleeing in disorder.

My husband said when he walked by #OccupyOakand just now that he didn't see police out in force like yesterday. Hopefully it stays this way.

from the chopper view I don't see any big force of cops either. of course that could all change really quickly. it's like a game of wills at this point

2011-10-26 09:48:01 PM
The cops should be required to wear patches with their corporate sponsors on them like NASCAR drivers.

Kicking as on protesters is OK until IT"S A VET?!

It had to happen sooner or later. This is as good an excuse as any.

On the bright side, they'll need more cops and jailers to enforce the brutality, so it'll help reduce unemployment.

2011-10-26 11:28:11 PM
Yeah, crack a few hippie skulls and no one really cares except other hippies. They really farked up cracking the skull of a Iraq war vet. Bad publicity for yourselves you've created there police.

pretty sure you're being sarcastic there, but it won't surprise me to see someone actually try to defend the cops with that argument.

To which I say this: I don't care. They farked up. They showed that they can not be trusted with a badge or the authority that goes with it.

Yes, I was being sarcastic, but you must admit that, from the authoritarian's perspective, hiring enforcers who think for themselves would be bad policy. Better to hire "team players" that will do as they're told without question.

Oakland is a tough town and Oakland cops aren't exactly known for their diplomatic skills. Cracking skulls is what they do. I don't think it ever occurred to them that somebody would object to the way they behave every damn day.

I'm not condoning their behavior - far from it - just attempting to provide some context for their bizarre behavior.

2011-10-26 11:57:11 PM
I don't really like these occupy folks, but they have a constitutional right to have a peaceful protest. And,

Indeed.

quickdraw: I'm not condoning their behavior - far from it - just attempting to provide some context for their bizarre behavior.

I do get that there's a context for this, and it didn't just happen in a vacuum, but still. I don't care what context there might be, there are some actions that are wrong no matter what. And this is one of them.

I should really just go to bed before I work myself into some sort of tizzy that gets the FBI at my doorstep.

If you participate in an unlawful assembly, refusing to leave after getting a lawful order to disperse, then you're breaking the law, and deserve what you get.

Amendment I

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

I don't see the "unlawful assembly" part there. What exactly does that mean?

OBEY, Citizen. Move along, nothing to see here but a bunch of smelly hippies who only want to bang on drum circles.

Wait - he wasn't one? QUICK, SPIN THIS.

THAT's why it's news. It throws back into the Fox Face that this thing is real and encompasses more than their stereotyped straw men.

Vandalism and violence from the protesters is a really wrong move. Even if they take our tents. Even if they hit us with rubber bullets and tear gas. Even the only violence we offer is pain and water balloons, we can't give in to the desire to fight back. This needs to stay peaceful.

I suppose Ghandi and MLK managed to control the crowds and keep them non-violent as much as they did (it wasn't perfect) through example, and without a central figure to follow it is harder to maintain order.

I had a friend tell me today that his dad used to do a lot of guard duty while he was in Vietnam. They'd be given an assignment to guard a bridge or area- and they'd have to do it without any ammunition. They stood on guard with empty weapons- to avoid stupid reactions from stupid trigger fingers.

These police should be doing the same thing.

Mentat: I don't see the "unlawful assembly" part there. What exactly does that mean?

I don't know how it works in Oakland, but in NE laws against assembly sit on the books until someone puts in the time and money to challenge them up to the supreme court. At least, that's how its been explained to us here... I'm not a legal expert.

Of course, we don't have a reason to challenge them in Nebraska; we've been approved to camp as long as we want to. If we did, or if we broke other ordinances in sanitation or noise, we could be kicked out. At least, that's how I understand it.

But I need to get off the computer before my battery dies.

2011-10-27 01:30:12 AM
This is beginning to look more like the Vietnam protests, Cops shooting vets. The right wing convinced everyone that it was liberals spitting on the troops and calling them baby killers. Someone did a study, and could not find a single documented case of a vet being spat on, but the myth persists. It's why every time a republican sees a soldier in the airport they applaud like a crazy person (to make up for all the spitting in the 70's).
