I'd consider myself a bad parent if I took my kids there.

The dirtier those little bastards get, the stronger their immune systems. That used to be the case, but with the anti-vaxers spreading cholera, measles, and other assorted contagion, I'd probably keep away from there, too.

Shouldn't be a problem, just douse them with hand sanitizer.

I have a co-worker who wouldn't let anyone near her kid unless they scrubbed up with hand sanitizer before they touched the kid. Guess what? Kid is sick all the time.

That's sad, that's probably all the exercise those fat little pork chops got was the wheezing up to the top of the slide only to get stuck on the way down. Now it's too germy for those 8 year olds to even take off their size 14 shoes.

Wait, was she banned for reporting the filth level of the play areas, or was she banned for being a disruptive biatch about it?

Had some friends that had the "makes their immune systems stronger..." arguement. Their little kids were sick ALL the time. So were they. Seemed like every month at least the kids or they were sick from something the kids brought home.
Stupid arguement.
The kids are now 9 and 12. Still sick all the time.

Wow, what an incredible busybody. Why just attack McDonalds, why not also your local schools, churches and community centers? They all have playgrounds. I appreciate that my local McDonalds at least has a bottle of hand sanitizer at the play area.

namegoeshere was she banned for reporting the filth level of the play areas, or was she banned for being a disruptive biatch about it?

Article says the latter. There's nothing more awesome than some overprotective parent who swabs fast-food playground equipment with a q-tip, takes it home, puts it on agar in a petri dish, cultivates whatever may grow over the next few days, then goes back to the restaurant and yells at the minimum wage 17-year-old behind the counter as if they're responsible.

Her website (linked in the article) clearly states that there are no regulatory standards for cleanliness of playground equipment, yet she harasses the restaurant instead of the lawmakers.

And yet many of us have grown up never getting anything worse than a cold, having never concerned ourselves very much about sanitizing every square inch of the planet so we don't get other people's dirty, dirty cooties.

That's how the immune system works. It needs pathogens to recognize and learn to defend against. If you protect your precious snowflake against them at every corner their immune system won't know what the hell to do with them when some get through, and the older they are when this happens the worse the results will be.

Anecdotes, yaaaaay!

The immune system is an ever growing organism whose successful interactions with contagions helps it to grow better defences to those and similar contagions. Thus total avoidance of contagions is inadvisable as it prevents the immune system from growing said defences. Of course, if you're diligent enough the point would be as moot as the danger, but it seems unlikely one could actively avoid all contagions. That being said, exposure to a greater number of contagions at the prime age of growth will increase that persons immune system's effectiveness, but it won't somehow make them impervious to illness. Middle ground, people, it exists.

I agree with levels of exposure that help build antibodies, it's just that they never even bothered to teach their kids to wash after using the bathroom or before they eat or to not let the kids' stuffed animals roll around on a public bathroom floor. (the basis of my rant, really) Just basic stuff that they laughed off with the immune system discussion.

That, and the fact the government wouldn't care either way. They got politics on the brain, and bacteria isn't a political issue unless its killing tens of thousands a day.

In unrelated news, McDonald's announced it's ending its lucrative relationship with the government to test biological agents on children after the recent anthrax vaccine/children testing revelation. There goes the next quarter profits.
