I am not sure Affleck needs that much help with his career. I mean The Town and Gone Baby Gone showed that he has skills as a director. Plus even if Affleck didn't work his wife still gets regular enough work to keep supporting him. That said a crime movie directed by Affleck, starring Damon and scripted by Terence Winter sounds kind of awesome.

I stand corrected, but Cambridge is a lot closer to Boston (over the bridge) than "Greater Los Angels" is to LA proper. Stuff on the right coast is much, much closer together.

cambridge is considered part of boston by the locals. For example, i live in Allston (technically) but i consider myself as a boston resident.

Nearly all of Cambridge is closer to downtown Boston than most of Boston itself is.

It's a fair assessment, if you live with 128, you're part of the Boston area. There's actually a difference in the various Boston accents. A Southie accent is different from a Charlestown accent is different from a Somerville accent is different from a Revere accent, and so on.

They should do a movie about psychologist that gets past his personal issues about his dead wife and helps a talented youth from South Boston realize his dream of being a genius.

Robin Williams can play the student and Matt Damon could by the psychologist.

Boston itself is relatively small. It's dense; some 700k people live there, but Greater Boston compares to other cities proper in landmass and density. Excluding people in Cambridge would be kind of like saying you're not from NYC if you live in Brooklyn. Not a perfect analogy. Outside the Greater Boston area are actual suburban communities with commuter rail into the city, for example.

//not a resident, just a fan, feel free to correct

Moopy Mac: But do folks from Boston proper consider you a Boston resident?

yeah, because "Boston" proper is sort of this spread out and nebulous city. For example, even though i live in "Allston" when i want a pizza delivered, or someone sends me a b-day card, when i get my parking permit i go to the Boston City town hall. When i renew my gun license, i do so through the Boston PD. There's a lot of town names that are left over from the really early days of settlement that now are all sort of one big mess.

also why our roads are so bizarre

Thank you.

One of my good friends always used to say she was from "Boston" when she was from Wilmington. Admittedly she would usually only do it when she was introducing herself but finally we called her on it and she got the hint.

Though when I lived in London for a while I would say that I was from Boston because very few people knew where New Hampshire was in relation to anything, and to be fair I only grew up less than an hour away by 93.

But yes, Cambridge is Boston for just about everyone in New England. In my experience the ones who most care about the distinction when describing it to outsiders are people from Charleston and East Boston.

There are also plenty of other actually good crime movies. Like the two Affleck ripped of to make 'The Town':
'The Friends of Eddie Coyle'
and
'Heat'.

I know, you like bang-bang gun movies but arent big on plot or dialogue so I guess there is plenty of light, simple entertainment out there for you.

when i was living in franklin i would say "outside" or "a suburb" of boston when i was talking to people who aren't from the northeast, even though to a local it would be barely metro-west. its just easier sometimes

Mrs OLG would also say that she was "from Boston" when she was talking to people outside the area. When she got a response that the other person was from Boston, then she would start to pinpoint the suburb/neighborhood.

The Boston accent doesn't end at the Boston border and I wouldn't say the accent differs that much from area to area. Someone who grew up in Cambridge and someone who grew up in Quincy would probably has similar sounding accents.

But I really hate hearing the Hollywood version of the Boston accent because you can tell they're trying too hard to fake it. Especially when it a character who's a Kennedy. Yea, the 'Rs' are dropped and the 'As' are sort of drawn out with an 'H' sound at the end but the actors stress those things to make it sound unnatural.

Wiki: Boston Accent.
