We had a boy as an honorary member of our troop in elementary school. His sister was in the troop and he had to stay after school with her, so we let him do all our little activities. As far as I know he didn't ever want to do anything else we were doing (camping, etc.), but I think he would have been welcome.

Unlike the girl who was seven and went camping with us, only for us to discover she wasn't frigging potty-trained and she wore pull-ups. It was discovered when she peed in the car. Pull-ups? Not designed to hold the amount of pee a seven-year-old makes. Thanks for the heads-up, That Girl's Mom!

"Girl Scouts is an inclusive organization and we accept all girls in Kindergarten through 12th grade as members. If a child identifies as a girl and the child's family presents her as a girl, Girl Scouts of Colorado welcomes her as a Girl Scout. Our requests for support of transgender kids have grown, and Girl Scouts of Colorado is working to best support these children, their families and the volunteers who serve them. In this case, an associate delivering our program was not aware of our approach. She contacted her supervisor, who immediately began working with the family to get the child involved and supported in Girl Scouts. We are accelerating our support systems and training so that we're better able to serve all girls, families and volunteers."

Holy fark. They're miles ahead of the Boy Scouts.

Your son has a Gender Identity Disorder, you need your son to see a doctor.

Also I agree that Girl Scouts can bars her son from joining. It's a private organization that allows women only. This parallels Smith College which only accepts women or FtM, not MtF.

Bobby is happy most of the time. But he says, sometimes in school, being a boy and dressing like a girl occasionally is tough. He's been bullied.

This is the most shocking thing I've ever read, ever.

But congrats mom, pushing him to "be all she can be" won't make the next 11 years hard as hell too.

Obviously we need more organizations, like the Tranny Scouts (Fem Irons?), and the Twink Scouts (Rump Rangers?) and the Dyke Scouts (Carpet Baggers").

Chinchillazilla: Thanks for the heads-up, That Girl's Mom!

One of those things with leading Scouts of either gender. Parents of the most messed-up Bitey McBiterson kids go, "I can drop my troubles off and have some respite 12-18 weekends a year? Hot damn, sign me up!" They're there at every event, while socially-adjusted Jane has music and soccer and 100 other things to be doing.

As I understand it many GS troops are caving, camping and hiking more than their male counterparts. Girl Scouts sounds like they're building little tom-boys and butch kids these days.

Oh_Enough_Already: Get used to the stripes, kid, you'll be super popular in ten years when you're the hottest he/she in prison after wrecking your life with drugs and crimes after mommy dearest skull-farked your gender identity to prove a point.

I think if a kid regularly demonstrates an overwhelming interest in the activities and traditional appearance of the opposite gender beyond toddlerhood, this may just well be a permanent condition due to some hard wiring in the brain. If he's 12 and starts stuffing his bra he may have to see a shrink if this is indeed a legit identity and perhaps gender reassignment might be the healthiest thing for him to keep him from getting into prison one day for hooking to pay for the estrogen pills.

The girl scouts of america should not be confused with the boy scouts of america. they are two very different organizations and have no relation to one another. the boy scouts is a homophobic organization. the girl scouts is not; they are very inclusive and tolerant and accepting/etc.

2011-10-26 12:58:35 PM
I don't really get it. If you're a girl, you have girl parts, am I not correct? Is she legally a boy or girl?

All that being said, I personally don't give a flying fark. It's almost 100% likely this is just another case of a stupid-as-can-be parent pushing her agenda on her child, and making him/her/it make a big deal out of something that the child probably doesn't even really understand. At the age of seven, things like thinking you are a girl and saying it "hurts your heart" are almost guaranteed made up and pushed on the child by someone older. I've had multiple younger siblings, and 7 year olds don't talk like that, much less think like that.

I was an honorary Boy Scout, for similar reasons (got dragged along to the meetings).

I did go to the Boy Scout camp, but my whole Girl Scout troop went on a weekend. They had archery and horses and our (nearest) camp didn't. I kicked all the boy's asses at archery. it was fun.

THIS.

Moreso now than when I was first involved in the 80s/90s. I went back as a counselor in 03... let's just say that you didn't have to say the word 'God' in the Pledge if you didn't want to or had another deity to name-drop, the camp directors were lesbians who met at the camp and were married in England, and there were scholarships for girls from the inner cities and girls recovering from illnesses.

There was a young-adult-male counselor the year before I was there, actually. Since you were NEVER allowed to be alone with a kid anyway, it worked out fine apparently.

That stuff is all I remember doing, really. We did a lot of caving and camping. One year we ran out of matches and we got to learn how to start a fire with a girl's eyeglasses. She'd seen it on TV and the rest of us were like "good luck, MacGyver," but it actually worked.

I'm not sure how, but I'm positive that someday that information will save my life.

If this is really the case (GID, or whatever), and not just "a phase" he's going through, and encouraged by his mom for some really dumb reason, then SOMEBODY has to sit him down and tell him:

"Son, you are different than most people you will encounter in the world. You WILL encounter hardships due to this. You need to make the conscious decision on how you want to behave, dress, etc. in front of other people in order to achieve whatever level of comfort you want/need out of life."

As long as mom keeps telling him "You go be who you want to be, just ignore everybody else" the kid in in for a life of misery.

Interesting. They were only founded 2 years apart, it would appear they would ultimately be traced back to a single entity. Unless the Girl Scouts was founded directly in response to the "boys only" attitude of the Boy Scouts.

Also it threw me off a bit you say they are entirely separate but on the WOSM (new window) site they explicitly say different movements, same founder, and same fundamental principles.

The child is a boy, who likes dressing like a girl and doing girl things. So gender assignment (there can be no "legality" about this) is male. I agree with you about the parent pushing an agenda on her child. Instead of just accepting that her boy just wants to be a girl, she needs to have him evaluated to see if he is truly transgendered or suffering from some sort of psycho-sexual maladjustment. Either way, he need professional assistance now. He may seem all happy-happy-joy-joy now, but that could change quickly as he ages and have tragic results. The FA doesn't mention a father. I wonder if he has had a male role model in his life.

It may not be this simple. Even if his external genetalia is male, he may still be a hermaphrodite. Only a complete medical exam and/or DNA testing could tell for sure.

Agreed. Hermaphrodism is a physical form of trasgenderism. He could have a penis and both testes and ovaries. But in true hermaphrodites, there is usually at least some genital ambiguity that is caught at birth. That's why a thorough evaluation is needed. Either way, it's very dangerous for this mother to just allow her kid to roll along with no help from the pros.

Gays are child predators? How is that attitude anything BUT homophobic?

I dont think i've ever seen that argument used against gays in boyscouts, at least out loud, their standard line is that the gay lifestyle is inconsistent with the teachings of the Christian faith, or something like that, even though boy scouts is a nondenominational organization. They dont much care for atheists either, theyre a lot like AA, you have to believe in SOMETHING. The Boy Scouts of today is not the same organization of yesteryear, they have been largely coopted by the church of latter day saints.
