It's back up. It's a guy wearing a cardboard cutout of the Spy from TF2 on his face such as how the Spy from TF2 disguises himself as other characters. I guess. That's what the article says anyway. I've never played TF2.

So...that makes him a red spy?

RoxtarRyan: Christ... you're better off going with the Christopher Walken printout. (new window)

The Walkenface is a useful thing. Last year, I found a good cardboard box that would fit over my head. To it I pasted the Walken printout you mention. I found a picture of Ernest Borgnine, one of Sissy Spacek and one of Rue McClanahan, made them fit a 8-1/2 x 11 sheet of paper. Each picture got a side of the box. I cut eye holes out in each one, hot-glued a big clump of steel wool to the top, and wore a lab coat, big black rubber gloves and carried a chainsaw. Sissy-Rue Mcwalkenborgninenstein was not that well received.

Holy crap is that dude lame. If you're going to dress as a spy you a few options...

1) You put on your Navy Blue or Red pinstripe suit and grab a cigarette
2) You put on your Navy Blue or Red pinstripe suit and print out 8/9 masks for the classes you are disguising as. (You are on the same team as everyone else at the party)
3) You bring 8 or 9 full costumes for all the other classes, and dress as a spy by changing costumes occasionally into other classes. (You are on the other team from everyone else at the party) Bonus points for using smoke bombs to create a smoke screen as you change

Under NO circumstances can you either not wear a suit or be dressed as another class.

Not only is this lazy and cheap, it's also pathetic and doesn't work at all. It's most certainly not clever, which is generally a requirement to be meta...

FTFA Why bother? Instead, look at how the Spy disguises himself as other people, and use this to be the Spy.

The issue lies right there, Hallowfailer. The Spy puts on a mask OVER his suit, so if you're on his team YOU STILL HIM IN HIS SUIT, he just also wears a paper mask. If you're on the opposing team, YOU SEE HIM AS WHAT HE'S DISGUISED AS. At no point do you see him as some idiot in a tee-shirt and jeans with a cheap paper mask.

The costume isn't of a Spy. It's of the person wearing the costume disguised as a Spy.

You only see him disguised as what he's disguised if you're on the opposing team. In a social or party situation, it's safe to say you're all on the same "team." Really a bizarre nitpick.

Besides... it's a joke costume made from a piece of paper. The point is you don't have to get a suit or anything like that. It's intentionally lazy.

Is it too much to ask that people making a costume which is supposed to be a reference put in enough effort that someone familiar with the source of the reference would understand?

He said in the article he had to spend a lot of time explaining the costume, and there's a good reason for that. It sounds like he's self justifying his incredibly lazy and poor spy costume by claiming it makes sense in ways it clearly does not. Neither people unfamiliar with TF2 nor those familiar with TF2 would understand what he was going for, so it takes him 5 minutes to explain to every person at the party what he's supposed to be.

\Also, while I may not be an Adonis in my body type, I am certainly not fat. I just happen to have played a very large amount of TF2.

The costume makes perfect sense because it is not a spy costume. The guy is dressed as himself as a spy using the same method the spy would use to dress himself as someone else: Cheap mask over face, same clothes he'd normally wear. It's lame and lazy, but it makes sense.

I got it right away... but meh. What's fun is when someone dresses up as a Spy, goes to a random convention, and wears masks based around what he should have dressed up as. Example: Wearing a Goku mask while at an anime convention.

It doesn't... you wouldn't see the mask if you saw his normal clothes (enemy), and if you saw the mask, you'd see his suit (teammate).

It doesn't make sense at all. It's flatout out lazy and sad.

His costume doesn't appeal to people who play TF2, and the lack of effort won't impress people who don't get the reference. It's a fail from both fronts.

It's somewhat mind-boggling that you can't understand this. He is not dressed as the spy. He is dressed as himself, but with the same ability to disguise himself that the spy possesses, and he has disguised himself as the spy. So, being that he is on your team, you would see his spy mask on top of his regular clothes. Were he dressed as a spy, his regular clothes would be a suit. HOWEVER, he is not, so his regular clothes are just jeans and a tshirt.

But that's stupid. It doesn't make any sense. You can't dress as yourself with a "superpower" or an "ability".

You can no more dress as yourself with the ability to cloak or wear a mask to disguise as other please as yourself with the ability fly or have x-Ray vision. Because you don't actually have that ability, and pretending you do isn't a costume.

Maybe he's not himself, then. Maybe he's dressed as a generic guy with a spy-like disguising ability. That's not a good costume, but it's still a costume.
