A lack of federal recognition of same-sex marriages means such families face higher tax burdens and unequal access to health insurance and government safety net programs, said the report entitled "All Children Matter: How Legal and Social Inequalities Hurt LGBT Families."

jaylectricity: Every gay couple I know is living pretty damn comfortable.

The impression I get is not how they're doing now... It's the fact that if something bad happens, they are seriously farked. I mean... WTF. I'd streamline adoption for children residing in the same house AT THE VERY LEAST.

The thought of not being able to see my child in the hospital or having him without support if I suddenly die is terrifying, and I wouldn't wish that on anyone no matter what.

This is where my live-and-let-live philosophy stops. If two people of the same sex want to get married, then fine. But do not bring children into that situation. I had a friend in high school who had two mommies, and the poor girl was as screwed up as they come. She ended up killing herself after prom our senior year. A family is defined as a mother, a father, and a child. Our society seems content to pervert the meaning of marriage, but I will die before I let them destroy the meaning of family.

No way. This is bullshiat. Gay couples can't accidentally have an unwanted child (or many) like so many poor, uneducated regular couples.

Being homosexual means you're not going to procreate. If you do procreate, then are you just a part time homosexual? Why is it that homosexuals can't seem to make up their minds? Regardless...this is just another case of the kids having to pay for the mistakes of their parents. That's a damn shame.

The unequal laws we have that create this situation are the perfect reason why we need these unequal laws to prevent children from having to grow up in underprivileged LGBT family's!

Not sure if this post is serious, but the way some people hate gays encourages some to stay in the closet and "try" to be straight.

If your "live and let live" philosophy stops at this point, it's not really a "live and let live" philosophy.

The meaning of "family" is not a mother, a father and a child. Sometimes it's 18 children. Sometimes it's a single mother because dad buggered off somewhere. Sometimes it's a single dad because mom was the one who took off - or maybe she died. Are you saying those aren't families? Sometimes a family is multiple generations of people, sometimes a family is just what you put together along the way. Your definition of family sucks and I reject it completely. It doesn't apply in any way to the real world.

MOTHER. FATHER. CHILD.

I don't know what real world you live in, but as a social worker, I see the destruction that same-sex couples bring down upon their children. As human beings, we have two hemispheres of the brain, a right and a left, and each side needs the nourishment of a male and female parent. You take away one, or double up the other, or half that attention by having more than one child, then the brain fails to form in a healthy fashion. You can pervert yourself, but you cannot pervert the simple definition of a family.

MOTHER. FATHER. CHILD. PERIOD.

And yet repeated studies show that kids in Lesbian households come out just as, if not more, well-adjusted and mentally healthy as kids who come from straight households. You think maybe her idea of "otherness" by being teased or told by outside influences that homosexuality is immoral contributed to it? Or perhaps it was just one thing she pointed to while she was coping with crippling depression and loneliness like many a teenager goes through everyday.

Um, that was one of the points of the article. Same-sex marriages, while recognized in vairous states, aren't federally recognized. So for example, my ex has no choice to but file single, though she is married to her partner.

It's not a way of life I would ever choose, or choose for my children. But there it is.

You don't have any right to force your definition of family on anyone else.

I had a mom and a dad for a few years, then just a mom for a few years, then two moms for several years, and eventually I was back to just one mom. I turned out just fine, and for you to imply that because we were "different" we weren't also a "family" is pretty farking shiatty.

Well, let's do some math here: Gay's make up something like 5% of the population as a whole. Let's say that same percentage extends to your line of work and 5% of your cases deal with homosexual parents. That means out of every 100 cases you deal with, 5 of those have gay parents. That means 95% of straight parents are involved in the physical, sexual and emotional abuse of their children in your field.

Now if you look across the board of sexual abuse inflicted on children in this country, straight identified men seem to take the cake hand over fist. Would you support legislation that bans straight identified men from adopting because they're more likely to abuse their children than a woman of any sexual orientation?

Settle down, everyone.
The first paragraph of the article specifically spins it as the denial of rights to these same sex couples as the reason for the poor economic standing. They even make the very factual statement that they're all very happy and well adjusted.
So no one's bashing gays. it's okay.

2011-10-26 12:28:15 PM
The only questionable thing about kids raise in same sex households is that they are LESS likely to be gay. That means that a certain number who would have been gay are choosing to live in the closet, perhaps even to themselves, to not perpetuate the idea that being raised by gay parents makes a kid gay. Of course, De-stigmatize the whole thing and that goes away too.
