I have a friend who had non-Hodgkins lymphoma when he was thirteen. Took him a couple of years to beat it. He's 39, three kids, owns his own business and lives life to the absolute fullest. That's what I notice about cancer survivors. They take nothing for granted.

The two year 'anniversary' of my father's death from cancer is next week. So, fark you, cancer.

And kudos to the kiddo for bouncing back. How the hell he gained weight (maybe the prednisone, but still - Dad lost nearly 100 pounds), I'll never know.

One of my son's soccer teammates was in a similar situation. He even waited a few extra weeks before starting treatment, just to finish out the season. This guy played with incredible heart. During one of the last games of the season, an opposing player blatantly fouled him. Only quick action by the center kept our team from taking the other player out in a major way.

Thirteen years later and the teammate is still going strong.
