I'm currently recovering a colleague's crappy Vista laptop so I got a kick out of the headline. Thanks Subby

Did it spend 5 minutes disconnecting from the network?

Early Adopter Laptops suffered quite a bit under Vista, mostly at the hands of the manufacturer who tried to lowball the system requirements.

Yup. My 4 year old Vista desktop is still going strong. The only thing I had to replace was the stupid NVidia video card that overheated and died.

Or use 2 gb of ram just to run normally.

Poor Vista. Almost no one understands.
I do. I know you were an upgrade.
You really were.

Globulars are about the coolest objects to observe, even the faint, unresolved ones.

No way man, Supernovae Remnant Nebulae are the shiat. Globular clusters are for pussies.

Both of the bright Northern Hemisphere SNRs are cool. But you, Mr. Kiwi, have access to more of them than we do up here. So I'll stick with globulars, thanx.

I was of course kidding.. We also have the best globular clusters too ;)

I Always go for a globular like Omega Centauri or 4 Tuc if I want to amaze a new observer.. through a well set up 8 incher with a good 2 inch eyepiece they are an amazing sight

vista rarely had to be restarted. it would just crash parts of itself, then get them running again. it was like watching someone stumble through a museum... knocking something down then picking it up only to knock down the thing behind him. hardly ever needed to restart though...

i did BSoD it a few times. shut off driver signing and install some horrible webcam, boom.

Yeah, I had a lousy view of Omega Cen from Anderson Mesa near Flagstaff one cold night. Bad as the view was, it was still incredible. I can only imagine seeing it from the Southern Hemisphere. 47 Tuc and M22 as well. There's also that beauty in Pavo (NGC 6752?).

Hell, I'd love just to see the Milky Way, naked-eye, as it goes overhead from the south. Brian Skiff's description in an old Deep Sky of his first trip south left me with an incurable case of astro-wanderlust.

Until then, this Saturday's my club's next observation. I'll be looking at the Fornax Galaxy Cluster again, and maybe a couple of Abell clusters in Andromeda and Pisces. And NGC 1049, the brightest globular in the Fornax Dwarf. It may not be the south, but it'll do.

On clear nights I often just drive out of town to somwhere dark and just enjoy the milky way. The area from centaurus through the southern cross to eta carina is stunning. the two magellanic clouds add something special too..

There are things I miss though.. andromeda might be number one on that list, it never gets above maybe 15deg above the horizon here.
